Report:
The club got a fantastic deal offered by Mary Gavin Hughes for a day out fishing with 2 nights accomodation, b&b, 1 evening meal. The hotel was ideal for us.
7 of us managed to catch the boat in the morning, which meant we were only missing one angler...... not so bad for a wekend away trip.
Out looking for mackeral first thing for an hour to give us fresh bait, but no joy. Clew Bay seemed to be empty of them.

No panic, Mary had day old stuff, and frozen ones also as backup. Off to the mark we go.
The anchor went down and the serious gear came out. Big reels, strong mono and 50 lb class rods. We were after the Common Skate! Mary reported that an angler on her boat the day before had lost one, so hopes were high.
They remained high all day through packs of dogfish, 3 nice bullhuss and I forget now how many thornback, ranging in size from small to big, about 7 lbs. A bait rod even managed to catch a single solitary mackeral all day too.
No Common Skate appeared, nor was there ever a hint of one. Ah well, that's fishing for you. The day was still thoroughly enjoyable - the weather brightened up, the craic amongst the lads was non-stop and the skipper was right on top of her game taking care of us.
It's great when your skipper is also an angler. You know she'll understand your priorities, and Mary has a reputation second to none in this regard. She was busy around the crew all day sorting tangles, rigging tackles, baiting up and still managed to produce numerous rounds of tea and biccies. Top skipper!
Thoroughly reccommended.
