Mon May 12, 2008 2:08 pm

People:Myself and a pal

Duration: 12.30pm - 17.00pm

Tide: HW around 16.30ish ?!

Weather: Fine, Calm, Sunny

Bait:lures, feathers

Rigs:

Results:1 doggie, 3 whiting, 1 mack, 6 pollock

Report: After yesterdays pretty woeful shorefishing session myself and my mate were ful of eager anticipation for our rent - a boat - session out of Bullock Harbour.

Didnt start too good when we were given a boat called "mary"

But, with our masculinity only slightly reduced we headed out towards Sorrento/White Rock area based on there being recent reports of good mackerel catches around that area.

Slow fishing to start with as the 2 of us had just 3 small whiting(on feathers) in the first 1 1/2 of fishing.

Decided to try a little closer to the cliffs, another 45 minutes passed which produced just 1 mackerel, a decent size though around 35cm I would say.

Time to try a different spot, headed round the channel inside of Dalkey Island, got a doggie on feathers but no mack's. The cliffs on the coastline looked like a scene from Saving Private Ryan, there were bodies everywhere and if we had stayed fishing in the channel for much longer we would have needed soldiers helmets ourself - there were lead weights flying all around us  - Time to move again, this time tried the deeper water on the seaward side of Dalkey Island, another hour and no fish......

We were getting desperate for a bit of catching now, and it was our last throw of the dice to try much closer to Dalkey Island (still seaward side), this spot looked ideal for pollock, full of weed and a bit of depth to the water.

As I was reeling in the feathers to change to spinning I noticed a bite, and reeled in a small pollock of around 1 1/2 lb, we then had our last hour spinning, I was using a german sprat, and my mate was using an orange spinner from a Lidl box of lures.

It was pretty frantic last hour for my mate but not for me.....

I caught nothing in the last hour

My pal caught 5 pollock from 1lb to around 3lb with his cheap lure :?

He also lost around 4/5 other fish, needless to say he was well happy, and I a little disappointed.

Atleast we now know where to go for the pollock on our next rent-a-boat session rather than wasting our time searching for the fish hotspots

4 hours rental of the boat at €20 p/h and there was only the last hour worthwhile really.

Forgot my camera, so havent got any photos sorry.

PS : Picked up a great tan though, so it wasnt all bad

Was out on Saturday. Found this fishing to be much better, closer into the harbour.

Two guys that were out with me, had a rod each with feathers. They were catching nothing. So I asked them if I could have a go, 5 mins on the rods and I pulled in about six fish

But I wasn't interested in catching them on the broomsticks they hire out from the boat hire shed. I wanted to get them on the fly.

I got 2 from the boat. About 18 from the shore(Pollock & poor cod).
Didn't realise there was whitting out there, they are good fun on the fly rod.

The whiting were caught round by Sorrento, 500 yards from the shore I would guess, they were 10-12 inches approx in size, so not monsters by any stretch of the imagination

Good to hear you got a few though, and I'm gonna try hit the boat again this sunday if you fancy it?

I'll have to hold off on that one m8.
If the weather is good, i'm going to Donegal to take out my yak.
If we have loads of rain, i'm going to Donegal to fish for salmon.
I think more than likely I will be in Donegal. Unless some very tall blonde chick with nice features asks me to stay in Dublin. In which case, fishing will be the last thing on my mind

Let's find a good place from shore. I'm available Tues and Thurs evening, finish work 6:30 in Blackrock. That still gives us about 4 hours.

Any suggestions. I really want to catch GOOD pollock down here. I'm talking about the regular 3lb up to 10lb fish that I get in Donegal.

3-10lb fish I wouldnt know a lot about sorry, maybe post in the Q&A section for some shore marks.

If you do by chance find a tall busty chick to keep you in Dublin, make sure she has a twin  8)

I cant make tomorrow evening, but thursday maybe a possibility
