Red Gill, Cork Harbour - 1st August

People:Me & the young fella

Duration:7:30pm - 9:45pm

Tide:HT 20:09

Weather:Cloudy, showers, NW breeze

Bait:None

Rigs:Plugs

Results:1 bass, numerous pollack

Report:Took the young fella out this evening. After the girls doing so well the night before he wasn't going to be outdone (neither was I as a matter of fact). We went to the same spot and again opted for spinning plugs. Again we ran into hordes of small pollack. One little bugger took by Rapala Sliver which was definitely twice its length. In the midst of all this I connected with a bass. Not a big one, but I broke my duck for the boat season all the same. After the obligatory photo he was returned fairly smartly. Unfortunately, he was the last of the evening. As it got dark we motored to the mouth of the harbour for some mackeral. All along the rocks on both sides of the harbour we could see the mackeral bashers hauling plenty. I positioned the boat of the west side of the harbour rock to give us some chance of pollack and codling and set up with an orange shad. I gave the young fella a new sabiki rig from Shamrock tackle - I was anxious to see if all the hype was true. Sure enough every time he hit the bottom he was into a pollack. Not that big but average for the area - 2 to 3lbs. After two drifts and no mackeral we headed in. In fairness he fairly murdered the pollack with this rig, but it seems to be no good for the macks as there did seem that there was plenty of them around.

Nice one Pat. Isn't it great to get the kids out?
Nice to see a bass, haven't managed one this year yet, although haven't targetted them from the boat yet, but you may have inspired me....

Now that the tides are starting to rise once again it's worth a try. Especially you're side - Mrtyville, Graball Bay & Church Bay. Let us know how you get on.
