Maighdean Mara, Galway Bay 14thjuly(not an SAI meet, honest)

Sun Jul 15, 2007 1:36 am

People:myself, petekd, nige, jd, marco, bradan +3 non SAI users(but maybe after today we may have converts :D )

Duration:9am - 5:45pm

Tide:low at 1:40am

Weather: not what was forecast.. no rain, no wind no clouds. actually quite a very nice day

Bait:mack, sandeel, shads, feathers, jellyworms, etc etc

Rigs:too many to count(and that was just petekd)

Results:13 species and plenty of fish

Report:

after quite a few phone calls in the morning to see where everyone was and make sure everyone was in the area of spiddle (of course bradan was the last to arrive(nothing new there)) we boarded the boat and waited for the skipper(kevin) to show up.. after a few minutes of waiting and having a foreign group cross the boat to get to another boat (Leaca Rua) that was along side the skipper arrived and we were soon on our way..
with the weather forecast to be mostly rain and little wind, after a few very small showers the sky cleared up and the temperature rasied for the rest of the day (at least they got something right-the lack of wind)
our aim was to go monster hunting.. so after a few drifts to pick up mackerel(one drift ended up picking up pollock) we set off for the mark ( apparently a good time to fish tope is on the rising tidal run from slack water) after waiting and waiting with little action(except doggies and small huss(bradan's first ever huss)) it was starting to get tedious.. then bradan caught a nice thornie 6lbs+(whole i was busy bringing in a few species like pouting and cuckoo wrasse)... petekd was gilling and showed bradan the fine art of gilling which entail had the two lads producing a quantity of pollock that would feed a small nation, but mostly all the fish were released to fight another day.. but ut has to be said that the best fish of the day was a very nice fat bull huss brought up by petekd, weighing in at around the 11lbs mark it has to be said that they are a beautiful fish in there own way..with varying tactics rods and rigs used on the day i'd say the most successful was petekd and his gilling method which most of us adapted to by the end of the day..

a good day was had with plenty of craic (endless amounts of slagging mostly aimed at me  )

in total i had doggies, pouting, poor cod, pollock, cuckoo wrasse, grey gurnard ans mackerel (7 species on the day)

there were plenty of photos taken on the day so keep an eye on this thread for updates..

p.s. my mind is a bit scattered at the moment  but i think i most things in..
and i'm sure that rest of the lads will fill in the gaps and add there bit in time..

Super day out with the lads, of course I was last Steve, but I was on time!
Had doggies, mack, huss, thornback ray, pollack. Lost count of pollack - some craic with the gilling tactics - thanks petekd! Could have targeted more species but I was having too much fun with the pollack :D
Will post photos when I get a chance...

Next time must remember to put sunblock on the oul' neck too

Enjoyed that day out.
Had Pollack, pouting, ballan wrasse, cuckoo wrasse, poor cod ,and loads of doggies. Too lazy to gill, which would have accounted for the bigger pollack.

Thoroughly enjoyed that day out, nice to do a bit of pleasure fishing with the gang without the whole competition vibe hanging over. I had Grey Gurnard, Doggies, Huss, Macks, Launce, Sandeel, Pollack, Pouting and a solitary Coalfish. Gilling tactics reigned supreme for the Pollack and it was nice to get Kev and Nige into the groove with them too. The weather played ball for once and, like Kev, Ive a lovely red neck this morning.

Laughing at the picture of Steve with his one fingered salute, envy is a horrible vice.... :D As for the comment on the skipper laughing at the "Crap" I brought along.... Well it bloody well worked didnt it... :D

Great day, sun, sea, slagging and Steve getting a good doing all day.... Ah, hard to beat! A fine big boat she is as well, we may have to come back next year.... The 4.30 wake up call was a little severe but aside from that, cracking day out. Fair play to the Galway gang for organising and inviting us. Cheers lads.
