Poor season - Best ever !

From today's Irish Independant :-

Fish stocks show huge rise

FISH numbers and species have shown an "astonishing" increase off the south west coast, according to the organisers of the biggest angling event held in Europe this year.
Some fish were exotic, but native numbers were also found in abundance over the past two weeks of the angling competition.
The presence of more than 40 different species of fish caught
on anglers' hooks is due to the dramatic decline in commercial inshore and trawler fishing vessels in the area, rather than to warmer waters as a result of weather changes, according to
a rare-fish expert with the Department of the Marine.
The increase is being hailed as an example of what can be
achieved in stock recovery in a short timeframe. The Failte
Ireland European Boat Angling Championships, which has just
ended, drew some 210 anglers from 16 countries.
Fish caught included tropical trigger fish, red sea bream,
tadpole fish, dragonets, gar fish, as well as the more common
species such as pollack, cod, gunard and whiting.

Do note that this is copywrite material. Hope II do not mind my
quoting, I have after all quoted their source.

I wonder if anyone has any further information on this interesting event :?:

There's a writeup on that competition in the Angling notes in today's examiner, which seems to back up that Indo report, and the Times' angling notes yesterday also had something on it.

I think this was the one fished out of Caherciveen about 5 or 6 weeks ago.

I fished another competition there about 3 weeks ago. Unfortunately the weather was force 7/8 all weekend so we hardly managed to fish it at its' best, however it certainly looks the part. On the Sunday in particular I was lifting 8 - 12 Lb Pollock with every lift !!! Wouldn't have minded weighing some of the big ones - they couldn't have been far off specimen. Good Ling and Conger also being caught.

I also managed two very big Pouting to add to the list.

Also on the boat was Bull Huss, Coalies, Haddock, Ballan & Cuckoo Wrasse, Thornies, Dogs, etc.

I will definitely return to fish Cahercivven in better weather.
