screeming reels, cork , 15th march

Fri Mar 16, 2007 6:17 pm

People:2 mike and myself

Duration:8 hours

Tide:4 up 4 down

Weather:sw/3-4 drizzle, followed by clearence to calm conditions

Bait:mack and lug and squid

Rigs:various, pennel, shrimp, gilling, flowing trace

Results:pollock up to 5lbs lots, coalfish up to 4lbs lots, ballan wrasse to 3lbs,whiting lots ( small to a lb) 2 cod 5lbs each, dogfish 12, a couple of 1lb haddock, and good old poor cod.

Report:At last saw a chance to get out and do some real fishing out of Cork Harbour. Even though march tends to be the worst time of year, we had a good day, with plenty of action to keep the rod bending.
Started at the entrance to the harbour, and had plenty of dogs and very small coalfish, but when the weather improved we headed out to the ling rocks.
The sea was lovely out there with hardly a puff of wind, which was great over the reefs, but no good for any drifting.
The reefs where alive with pollock and coalfish, ( would imagine the wrecks would also hold good numbers of fish at present),but drifting was a little more sparse, with plenty of small whiting, and only the odd decent fish.
All in all, not a bad day out for the time of year, and more importantly, a chance to give the boat a good run after a long lay off.
