Brandon bay, MV Deep Cove

Hi all

Just returned from a session out of Scraggane pier with Danny MCCarthy on his boat Mv Deep Cove.

Last saturday we were planning to do some wrasse fishing in the morning and then go for ray in the evening, but the weather forecast was so bad for the sunday that our charter trip with Danny McCarthy had to be moved to saturday instead. So it was off to Scraggane pier for an early 9am start to try and beat the fast approaching storm.

We got out to the marks at about 10am, and with Only myself, Eoin and My Dad along with one other guy on the boat it was spacious and comfortable. First order was to get some macky and this was easily accopmlished . My Dad also had this codling on his first drop with hokkais.

With enough bait secured we headed further out to try for larger fish, all except Eoin who once again spent the whole trip getting sick and sleeping (no sea legs). We got to the marks and fished baited feathers, mupppets, rag, mackerel strip and sandeel on standard flappers or flowing traces.

We were straight into fish and I had this nice brace of Pollack on baited muppets, with the one on the right the biggest of the day.

The day was destined to turn stormy and the weather was coming up too fast to drift over the sandy marks or anchor and try for tope, ray or spurs. We had to content ourselves with fast drifts over rocky ground and try for as many types of fish as possible. This suited me as I was just three species short of hitting 50, so the race was on. First new species was this cuckoo wrasse on a baited hokkai.

On the next drop over a shallow I had this triple shot of two pollack and another wrasse on rag baited muppets.

Next species was this Red gurnard on mackerel strip and then I finally had my 50th with a small haddock.

The weather was starting to get bad though and you can see just how bad the weather had gotten from the next picture. Just compare that to the picture of me with the two Pollack above. We continued to get some good fish with lots more Pollack , ling and another gurnard showing up. But as the weather deteriorated so did the fishing and for the last couple of hours we had to stay close to the islands for shelter and caught very little.

Thanks again to Danny for working so hard to put us on fish despite the bad conditions and I can really recommend him to anyone who is around the Kerry area and fancies a spot of sea fishing, rods, reels and advice all supplied if needed.

Good luck
