People:Me and 13 others

Duration:24 Hours!

Tide:All

Weather:Rough then not so rough

Bait:Live squid, dead squid, chunks of garfish, live chinese mackerel & rainbow runner, jigging lures.

Rigs:Single hook with 300mm wire trace hanging on the end of a 400g weight & pulley rig with 300mm wire trace.

Results: 2 Barracuda, 10 Garfish, 8 Chinese mackerel, a Rainbow Runner and a Trevally

Report:

Been a long time since you saw a report from me!!

Set out 10pm Friday sailing 8 hours out to the oil rigs in South China Sea. Then it was a 24 hour fishathon from 6am saturday to 6am Sunday.
Everyone else was complaining about the lack of fish compared to other trips, but I was happy with 22 fish including my best Barracuda, a smaller one, Giant Trevally, Chinese Mackerel, Gar fish & a Rainbow Runner!

It was dark on the way out and rough on the way in. It was even more rough on the way out though!!

Cracking weekend!

First stop was at a permanent oil tanker for some jigging. I was into a monster on the first drop, which shot down at a great rate of knots and was the first test for my new rod. This one chewed through the 100lb mono and so I switched to wire traces and couldn't get another bite at this spot. Some of the other lads managed some nice barracuda though so at least the fun had begun.

As we stopped off at the rigs, the fish came in, but it was a bit stop-start with long waits before the next fish.

Interesting that the Captain always got the biggest fish and that jigging was far more productive than bait fishing.

Couldn't take a lot of photo's as I was too busy fishing!! All in all a great trip!! Is it normal to still feel wobbly??

My fist barracuda - caught on a live mackerel

One of the many garfish caught on float fished squid

My first trevally caught on a jigging lure

My second barracuda weighed in at 15, caught on a jigging lure as they were untying the boat at 6am Sunday. Got back downstairs from the top deck and everyone else had gone to bed!

The final haul - minus a few in the live hole

A happy me with my two barracuda! The one on the left sliced through my fingernail and finger like a razor blade - that was when it was dead & frozen!!

Always new we'd make a boat angler of you :D
Great report, great fish. You're not missing much here at the moment.

Pete,
You'll have more trouble from the baracuda's on board with you than from the fishy type. Watch your grub around the Baracuda Domneyicus

two species

Postby screeming reels » Mon Mar 12, 2007 7:22 pm

hi, not that i'am being smart, but having spent a couple of years down that way, i think you will find that you have two separate species in your last picture.
the largest is a Barracuda, and the other is called a military seapike!
They are generally thinner and smaller, but the main difference is in the tail, as you can see the barracuda has a dark tail with light coloured tips, and the seapike is a much lighter and even coloured, usually pale yellow.
glad to see you had a great time there, it is the one trouble with that area as i found, you have to travel to rigs or structures to get fish, bet it was nice and warm though!!

Thanks guys. It is hard for me to get out! Was working all last week, all weekend and finish on Friday for 2 days of fishing! Tried to get out on the boats again, but all are fully booked. After this weekend, I don't get a day off until 14th April  !!!

Too much work & not enough people!

Managed to get back out to the 80 mile rigs out on 13th April!!

Playtime's over guys! The big boys are in town now - Amber Jacks - LOTS of them. I lost 5 big ones - 2 to the rigs, 3 to end tackle. Also lost two big rainbow runners - one to my line being too light on the light fishing gear and the next because of crossed lines with another guy - who crossed 4 other lines at the same time!!

The biggest Jack weighed in at over 14kg - but looked a lot bigger. The rainbow's are getting bigger also - around the 5 to 8kg mark. There are smaller ones too - which we used as live bait for the big Jacks!

If you find yourself in the tropical waters, here are some tips:

Make sure your gear is strong - the fish will test your stamina and your gear to the max.
Even your light gear needs to be strong enough for a 5 to 8kg Rainbow - because they are around at the same time as the small ones.
Catch as many small ones as you can when they are around - we caught loads, but they soon ran out when used as Jack bait!!
Make SURE your knots are good!!
Nothing less than 60lb line for the bottom gear!!
Take advantage of the trolling - I caught 2 Dorado and a Striped Tuna. 100 to 120meters behind the boat. 2 Wahoo were also hooked, but threw the hook. The Tuna was caught between rigs - the Dorado were both on the way back.
Hook size - 4/0 for most of the bottom fishing.
For the big Rainbows - we started hitting into them on free-lined squid with a small weight to take them down - be prepared for them to run across everyone else's line though.
Take some spare line too.

Not so many people jigging as last time, so jigging was less effective - handlines & electric winches were by far the most productive!

2 new species - 2 Dorado (Dolfin fish/Mahi Mahi) and a Striped Tuna

Not my fish or my kid, but shows how big they are!!
