European record six gill on Clare Dragoon, Carrigaholt

Wed Jun 17, 2009 10:39 am

Apparently a German angler caught a very large six gill shark yesterday which weighed in at
1056lbs, 480kg fishing with a skate trace at anchor off loop head
on board the Clare Dragoon. Looking at the EFSA web site this seems to
beat the previous European record for 80lb class gear which was 466kg from the
Azores. I'll post a picture if i get it later

Bloody hell that could eat the biggest fish I ever caught.

Well done. :D

Any info on bait used, how long to get to boat etc :?:
You would certainly need the right gear and arms like popeye.

How on earth did they weigh half a ton of fish?! Luke had difficulty lifting up a medium sized blue last time I was out with him.... :D Kidding Luke if you're reading.... Seriously though, did they manage to bring that aboard for measuring and stuff? The mind boggles at how you would handle something of that size which beats my biggest fish by a factor of 12!

That is a fantastic achievement for both the skipper and the angler involved. Well done to all concerned, looking forward to seeing a pic.

They are holding the pictures of it close to their chests, hoping to get a big contract with hello
magazine or something :-), The angler who caught it wished to claim the record. I think they weighed it on a trailer then took it off with a fork lift and weighed the trailer.

Hi Guys,

The conservation element of this post has now outweighted the original post. I am going to split it out into a seperate thread.

That's some shark very well done to both angler and skipper!

To be fare to the skipper it was most likely the anglers decision to bring that shark ashore so all the skipper could really do is try his best to encourage him not to and unfortunately not everyone will listen to the skipper in such a case

And of coarse another thing is the shark may well have been already dead when it got to the boat as I can imagine with such a shark it took quiet a while so lets not jump the gun in blaming the skipper. I'm sure he as much as everyone here would like to have seen it swim away to be caught again another day

Totally Agree Jim. Luke is pro C&R. Some might remember that a previous Irish Record 6 Gill shark was released at the side of the boat.

Was there a six gill shark caught off clare or galway last year ????

Tom this six gill was caught at the same mark on the same charter boat as the one last year which suggests
it might be possible to specifically target them.

The trace was a skate trace, 300lb mono to a mustad 3407 size 10/0 ( i think ). Im surprised that
it did not bite through the mono trace like a knife through butter, must be due to the position
of the hook in the mouth.

The angler was 70 years old but fit and strong and fought it to the surface in 35 minutes. He believed
he was into a big skate.

if i could find some lads willing to share a charter id book a day in early july,
but they all seem to have gone a bit wobbly on the fishing on this site :-)

well done to the angler and Luke, great fish, surprised it just took 35 minutes to bring to the surface, the blue shark i had last year took nearly that long and it was only about 100lbs.

just wondering was it far off shore?

well i saw in the 2008 specimen book the mark is described as 15km west of loop head,
so i guess that must be where it is :-)
