poor fishing at Youghal

Mon Apr 07, 2003 4:46 pm

(moved) Yesterday (5th April 2003) was a miserable day at Youghal, Sea-fog and a south easterly breeze which killed the fishing. Despite having the best of peelers not a bite in four hours. Two competitations on the slob bank and only three flounder caught.

Lots of good quality flounder been caught in Youghal at the moment, even during this sunny spell. Crab is a must. A recent comp had over 30 flounder (25cm plus) from 8 anglers in four hours.

Slob Bank aka Wall, Youghal, Co. Cork 2 November 2003 7-11 pm ebb

I fished the slob bank last night (02/11/03) from 7.00 to 11.00pm in a competition. It was a very slack tide with a low volume of water, however the fishing was not that bad. Some decent coalies about over 2lbs and the odd good flounder. However, there were lots of codling with only a few to size, plus the odd pin whiting. Crab was the main bait as per usual at youghal, however tipping with lug, mackeral and mussel made a difference. Most fish were caught at distance, thats over 100yards to mere mortals. Some reports of the odd bigger codling at green park and ferry point.

Ferrypoint, Youghal, Co Cork. 9th November 2003 dusk, gale, ebb

Ferrypoint: Fished the River side of the point on Sunday the 9th as the weather was blowing big time from the south west. Started at dusk and fished just over high tide. Very little to show and crabs were eating my bait faster than anything I have encountered before. I used crab, razor, lug and mackeral. Just as the tide started to ebb, I had a small whiting and next cast a good Coalfish (>2lb) but ran out of bait as the fishing was picking up. No Codling being caught I quess its getting to late.

Ballywilling & Ballycreannon, Co. Cork 8 September 2003

The Ray are here.

Reports of some nice blond and thornbacks been caught over the weekend (5-8 Sept) from these beaches using mackeral. It also seems that the coalies have arrived early this year

Ballywilling, Co. Cork 5 & 6 October 2003

Two Competitations Fished 2hrs down 2hrs up on Ballywilling over the last weekend at night. Very little fish showing apart from the odd dog and one eel. The Munster closed in on here in 2 weeks time and hopefully things will have picked up by then. Most people fished with sandeel or mackeral and had a difficult time keeping the bait on as small coalies and pouting were everywhere. I think the distance bhoys will be hot favourites.

around Youghal, Co. Cork 27 & 28 June 2003 8-11 pm

Fished Pilmore estuary Friday 27th June 8.30pm to 11.00pm with brother and couple of mates, couple of rods with peeler crabs and couple of spinners. Mate caught 2lb bass and released unharmed, nothing else caught.

Headed out to Ferrypoint midday Sat 28th to fish incoming tide up to 5pm.
Bottom fishing again with peeler crab, fishing into southeasterly wind, very choppy still one of the guys managed to land 2 reasonable flounders (around 2lb) and I got and released a small one (near 1lb). Fished too close to mussel beds and lost 2 full trace sets

Decided to head over to another mark near Youghal Bridge and fished outgoing tide across the slobs into main channel, again hoping for bass but no luck.

Sun Morning 29th, 5.20 am start to fish high tide 6am at New Quay. 6.00 am managed only catch of session, nice flounder near 2lb again, on 2 hook trace with peeler. Tide on way out was very strong with lot of weed, very annoying when pulling on line. Couple of small doggies swimming around on top of water, but no other catches. Finished up at 8.30. and decided to go for breakfast

Fished it on the 25th May. just below the GAA pitch. Full tide was approx 2.30pm and I fished from 1.30 to 4.30 pm.
First cast I had a nice flounder (28cm) on crab at 100 yards. I had a second rod with a rolling lead and a 3 hook flapper at 30 yards and had a similiar size flounder on crab at full tide. Between 2.30 and 4.30 I had 3 Flounder (32cm, 34cm & 35cm) all on crab at 100 yards and on the last cast a Plaice of 33 cm on crab tipped with razor. A good days fishing, some other anglers about who also seemed to be catching some flounder, with no Bass about.

Youghal Beach 30.11.2003 7-11 pm around high tide

Fished Youghal beach last night in a competitation 7 to 11pm. Full tide was around 10.30 ish. Some good whiting were caught early on using mackeral and crab. Lots of pin whiting stripping bait but things got quite towards full tide. Some decent coalies were caught at all stages of the tide, but after full tide some better whiting showed. Interestenly most fish at the latter stages of the comp were caught in very close (50 yards). Five fish won, with most people having fish. I had some nice lug but it didn't do me any good as the frozen baits did best.

Cobh

Tue Dec 02, 2003 11:11 am

Fished from 1930 to 0130 on Sun night. Using frozen black lug I stayed until 2330 at the beach opposite Haulbowline. I caught a small codling and had one major bite that I lost to rough ground. I almost had it landed too! The area has a lot of weed with lumps of concrete liberally strewn about. Although I lost quite a bit of gear I will try it again. Next time though I will be using spark plugs as weights with simple rigs made up from loops in a line!

I moved to the deepwater, by the footbridge from 2330 on and landed 3 Whiting. Two of them were 40 cm, landed with the same worm!!! The chap next to me was fishing with squid and mackerel with little success.

Declan...is it possible to buy frozen black lug in Cork ?

Ferrypoint Tuesday 30th Dec

Ferrypoint Youghal Co Cork 20.12.2003 2-6 pm around low water

Fished Ferrypoint Tuesday 30th Dec, 2 to 6pm (Low water 5pm). Had a doggie on Mackeral, a dab on Mackeral and a coddling of about 1lb on crab. About 5 small whiting on mackeral, squid and crab. A friend also caught plenty of whiting and a nice flounder on mackeral. Fishing not great one lad near by a nice coddling of about 3lb on lug. Once the tide turned there was little or no action.

Youghal Quay 4th Jan

The Quay, Youghal 5.1.2004 2-6 pm

Fished the Quay in Youghal from 2 to 6pm Full tide about 5pm. Little action until dark, had a nice flounder (30cm) on mackeral during daylight. Things heated up after dark, 2 flounder (32 & 33cm), 4 Coalies (25, 33, 33 & 38 cm), and 4 whiting. The flouder were caught on mackeral or crab and as was the coalies. The whiting were all on mackeral or squid. Lots of people fishing but most had given up before the action began.

Youghal Beach

Mon Jan 26, 2004 2:18 pm

Youghal Beach Sunday 25th Jan. 4 to 8pm rising tide, high water 9pm.

We fished our first competition of the new year and with new members. 26 anglers a great turnout. However the fishing wasn't great, not many in size fish caught. Whiting, flounder and coalies were caught, but only 2 fish won overall. Most fish were caught on mackeral or lug with crab not seeming to work at all. Some late coddling showed up in the harbour last week but they disappered as fast they came.

Cobh, 1930 - 2400 28/1/2004

Thu Jan 29, 2004 10:55 am

Cobh 28.1.2004 7:30 pm to midnight

Caught a couple of small codling on frozen lug in front of the houses opposite the naval base. Moved to the key wall near the footbridge and caught 3 small whiting on the lug tipped with squid. The chap I fished with caught a few small whiting with 3 to size. One in particular was about 27cms. He was using sandeel and supermarket bought mackerel.
Though I was disappointed not to bring one home for the pan we enjoyed the night. With the regular knocks on our rods the night flew by.

Cobh, Deepwater Pier 11.2.2004

Thu Feb 12, 2004 10:46 am

Cobh, Deepwater Pier - 11.02.04 2000-2330 calm sea

Fishing calm seas with the temperature about 6 degrees I caught 6 whiting. Only one was big enough for the pan. Using frozen sandeel and some of the new frozen velvet crab I found the sandeel was most effective. The jury is still out on the crab.

I was reasonably busy for the first hour but soon after the full tide the fishing died for about an hour and a half. I caught 3 of the whiting in the last 15 minutes, including the one at home in my fridge.

There were 6 people fishing the pier with a few catching LSD's on squid also. One guy caught a good size whiting, 2 -3 lb's I am told.

Youghal Bridge (under)

Mon Mar 29, 2004 1:17 pm

Youghal Bass club had there third master angler competition on Sunday 28th March, 2004

3 to 7pm low water at 5.30 pm above the the "new" bridge (built in 1960's and now the only bridge) both on the Cork and Waterford side.

The fishing was very poor until the tide turned, some small whiting, codling, coalies, flounder and dab were caught. But the winning catch was fantastic, 11 fish with about 8 in size mainly coddling between 2 to 2.5 lbs. I am afraid I cannot divulge the exact spot as anglers either side of the winner blanked. Youghal is fishing very well at present, last wednesday 14 flounder were caught by one angler on ferrypoint, some of which were over 2lbs. A few coddling are still about so the quays, greenpark, the abbey and ferrypoint will still produce to crab.
