Report: Had a single bite. Not a big deal I thought, but then he started fighting. Took the hook and went straight for the open water. Powerful and fast. He fought me for over 30 minutes and really caused pain in my arms and left hand and I finally lost him. When I saw the STEEL 1/0 hook - well wasn't a hok, was rather straightened out - I knew I didn't really have a chance.

Hell, I'd love to know who or what he was!

Anyone ever come across such strong fighters in that area?

I had a similar experience once, it took line, I gained line, it took line....twas one of the best fights I ever had. I eventually landed it after a good half hour of heaving and pulling and farting... Turned out to be a carrier bag, neatly hooked through both handles that was catching the tide like a kite.... :D I hope yours was of the fishy variety though.

What make of hook were you using ???

If it really moved, as in way faster than a current tide, I would suggest a small tope, as they are known to frequent the area at this time of year...

A conger is also possible, as you can hit the big ones well out over the sand, and there are a few large ones around what is a very snaggy spot.

If it was a long slow pull I would suggest a big ray or small skate, again known to inhabit the area.

And the shopping bag can not be discounted, I've had a fearsome struggle with one of them buggers, definitely a specimen! :D :wink:

Do not fish any of the piers there as they are by and large poor enough. Try the spine of rock on Lacken strand for flatfish and decent sea trout (when the season opens) and you access this from the Kilcummin side.

There is a hotspot on the flags that produces lots of small pollack and you can also pick up small ling if you can keep the bait in one place further up towards Benwee head. Best to try for this at low water off the rock shelfs.

If you have a car, the best pier to try is Belderg, a fair bit further west.

And yes, it moved but I don't know if it was much faster than the tide, it was going out at that time so the bag is certainly wihtin possibility...

Big fighter, though. At least LIDLs or Dunnes by the pull I got from it.

I suppose I'll give Belderg a go one of these tides!

I had a similar experience not far from there, straightened out a big mouth 3/0 hook, no stopping it,

got a similar fight in a strong tide, but landed mine and it was a large bra hooked though the straps
