North Kerry Strand (RAY) SEE PICS

Tue Jan 30, 2007 10:41 am

John Lynch and Gearoid McSweeney:

7pm - 10.30pm:

LW 8.30pm:

Mild and calm:

Sandeel and Mackerel:

See report:

6 Ray, 12 Dab , a rockling and a pouting:

Catch and Release:: Yes

We arrived at the mark about 7pm, half an hour later than we would of liked. The weather was very mild with little or no wind and a flat sea. The signs were good for the chance of a Ray.

I fished 2 rods and rotated 3 rigs, a pulley pennel size 2/0 b940m, a 2up 1 down golds loop size 1 b940m and a 1up 1down golds loop size 2/0 b940. Gearoid fished 1 rod with pennel pulleys with I'd say 3/0 b940's and a 2 up 1 down golds loop with size 2 b940m.

I fished with small sandeel tipped off with mackerel while gearoid used mackerel straight.

From the start we were straight into fish with a Thornie a Dab and a Rockling in my first two casts. Gearoid was straight into a pouting. We fished at range for the whole session, putting our rigs out 150 yds + as this is where the Ray and Dab were feeding. The fishing was non stop with only 1 of my casts in the first 2.5 hours coming back blank. The Thornbacks put up a good fight at this mark using the sandbanks and deep ledges to their advantage.

The Dab were of a good size with 7 of the 10 I had between 24 - 29cm. They seemed happy enough to take large fish baits which is not how I would usually fish for them but it certainly picked out the better fish. We had 6 ray between 2.5lbs and 4.5lbs, not massive but at this time of the year we will take it gladly. I had 6 ray on this mark in November, which leads me to think that there are ray here all year round.

I think Gearoid will make sure he puts a second rod in next time. Gearoid has the pics of the Ray on his phone so hopefully they will follow soon.

Yeah was wondering that myself!

I don't usually fish for Ray with b940 match hooks but I had no rigs made up so I used a few I had made up for a comp last weekend.

They stood up well to the Ray but I'd say once you head over the 5-6lb mark they would begin to bend.

Well done lads and thanks for the report even if I am raging that I'm stuck in work. I'll be out at the weekend so let me know if you've plans. I could only hit here low water during the day and looks like frost. Is it worth fishing here the weekend?
