Garrylucas (Garretstown)/Bridge in Kinsale, Cork 10/01/2007

Bait: lugworm

Results: 9 whiting, 1 shore rockling

Catch and Release:: Yes, all back alive (drop from the bridge didn't seem to bother them?)


Report: Had intended trying for some winter bass as had been doing well up to end of November with bass every shore trip, but had no time for fishing since then (bar New Year fish in Scotland with only a dab and an LSD caught). First few casts put us off, as lines were being dragged by weed and water, so we opted for the easier option from the bridge. Plenty of whiting around, all small that we saw, plenty of bites, missed a lot on my big beach caster, was basically checking it every so often in case a fish was on. Got my first new species for a while, which looked to be a shore rockling as far as I can ascertain (either that or a three bearded rockling), but from coluring and head shape I'd say shore rockling.
Good to be out in that fresh air!

Garretstown can be a nightmare weed wise after heavy Southerlys, and we seem to have had nothing but Southerlys since mid November..... I was going to give it a try this weekend but dont think i'll waste my time there now to be honest.

Only fished off the bridge a couple of times last winter (usually on route home from weedy garretstown :oops: ) never had anything but small stuff, anyone ever get anything decent from it?

Theres another small beach which name escapes me which would be down the road to the LHS of the bridge after crossing from the Kinsale side. Did you ever give that a try?

I know where you mean - past the marina, but don't remember the name of it. Never fished there, but is on my list of places to visit around Kinsale. Actually, think I have found pic of it here and it's called Dock Beach apparently? see attachment.
I have fished Sandycove over the rocks and got pollack and mackerel on spinners and plugs. Never used bait down there though and about 4 years ago last time I was there.

Havent a clue if the name is correct but thats the spot alright. I fished there once, not off the main beach but around to the left off the rocks for an hour or so but caught nowt. That was 2 years ago though and I didnt give it a proper try in fairness.

unfortunately dont have any info on sanycove, yet........its on my list of priorities to become better aquanted with ,in fact the whole of kinsale bay is in my opinion very underfished, must try do abit more round there

Anybody try up around the Charles Fort area :?: You have rock in close but it than goes out on to clean ground...have to agree with lumpy the whole area outside named marks (ie. the bridge ,the old bridge, sandy cove etc.)tend to be left alone or are they just considered non-marks even though most are sign posted as fishing spots.You can also get a map of local areas to fish from the tackle shop down there.

...i reckon there are so many potential marks down there that it's just a case of spending time down and around the bay area.

ya i guess its just a case of pulling the finger out and straying from the reliables.............

I fished Charlesfort once off the rocks, but gave up when I had a seal, an otter and a heron :evil: all around me. Nice wildlife spectacle, but not much hope of getting a fish with those guys around. I've tried a couple of other marks around Kinsale as well, but nothing out of the ordinary, but maybe didn't put in enough effort. You never see many people fishing around it (except for the mackerel bashing in the summer). I always have the impression it doesn't fish very well, but more a feeling, no evidence to back it up. I fished out by the Bulman in a boat as well and got nothing.

Yes, an otter, a seal and a heron walk into a bar....it has the makings of a joke alright.
I suppose it was a sign of fish there :lol: but not being skilled as my 3 animal companions at fishing I decided to call it a day at that point. Actually now I think about it, most of the times I've seen wildlife like seals/dolphins/whales/basking sharks I've had good fishing (in the boat anyway) - anytime I've seen an otter its been bad, but they've been from shore. I must start paying more attention - maybe you've hit upon something there. Find the wildlife - find the fish?????
