2007 Leinster Leagure - First leg - Clones

Weather: Shite..... SW force 6-7 with rain

Bait: Lug, squid Mack, frozen blacks, sandeel & Mussel

Rigs: 3 hook flappers with shorter snoods doing better for me.

Results: I think 8th or 9th in Zone B for me.

Report:

This was a tough start to this years Leinster league with strong winds and driving rain for most of the day. There was a good turn out of SAI anglers. We had 7 anglers at the Comp. The sea was heavy and coloured. The tide was also unusually heavy for this area with 6oz being needed to hold bottom. Even then the lead was getting pushed a little. I started with longer snoods on my 3 hook flappers and quickly changed as they were getting tangled in the wind. Second cast with snoods trimmed to about 18 inches seen me with a double of Dab, none counting. This set the tone for the day. I must have returned about 12 small dab that just wouldn't make the 20cm mark. In the end I had 9 counting fish, that included Dab, Rocking, Whiting and Codling. I had the pleasure of fishing beside Eamonn Fogerty (brother of Noel) who gave me a right kicking with 17 fish. Noel a few pegs up also managed 17. I think 22 fish won my zone (B). For me... Mussle was the bait of choice ealry on with lug performing better as the day went on. Although I had heard that this venue fished better closer in, I managed all bar my last two fish at about 60 yards.

Zone A - I think 18 fish won.
Colin - 6 fish
Mick - 3
Donal - 3

Zone B - 22 fish won
Mark - 9
Kev - 9
Alby - no counters, a few undersize fish.

Zone C - I think it was 14 or 16 fish here
Sean - 8


All in all a tough day, but a bit of craic all the same. My only gripe was that each fish had to be witnessed by two anglers (each side) which ment a bit of running forwards and backwards. A really well run comp by Raheny SAC I know one or two of the lads post here... Well done guys, a comp to be very proud of.

Kev i was in zone B with Alby n urself. i had 12 fish! Sean had 8 in. great to see yee all. shame about the weather!

gettin 2 witnesses for each fish was tough goin alright. knackered!

On Behalf of Raheny SAC - many thanks to all anglers from the SAI who turned up. Full results will be posted on the Leinster Site shortly.

Overall winner was Eoghan Duff of South Shore with 22 fish (Zone B) - 507 points

Zone A winner was Martin Howlin Wexford with 464 points

Zone C winner was Tony Bolger of Wicklow Bay with 400 points

Stephen Mason of South Shore won the Junior section with 14 fish (hammering me on the next peg !)

Longest fish was a codling of 48cm.

Meant to add that the two signature rule has evolved due to reports of unspostsmanlike (!) incidents in the past.

I'll edit the post Mark.... cheers. I didn't realise that you had 12 counters, well done.

I thought that's what it was Brian...... With that being the case, then two signatures it is. Might be a thought to add that signatures have to come from a member of a different club. Terrible to think that that's the reason. Normaly wouldn't have bothered me too much. Just a bit tougher running up and down the beach with the wind and rain.

Yeah yeah, thats it, thats why I decided not to catch any counting fish, I couldn't keep running up and down the beach, yeah thats it :cry:

Fierce conditions, but the anglers who caught a fair few fish did really well in those horrible conditions. The sea was montrous, I had 7oz grips wash up 60yds down the beach. Fair play to Mark (a few pegs down from me)who kept bringing in double and trebles of flats, unfortunately alot of them were undersize which seemed to be a trend along the beach. Me or the guy to my right did not catch one flat for the hole comp and the next guy down only had a couple I think, I'm goin to fish to the South Shore Comp in Feb just to see was it a fluke I did so badly or can I indeed again finish last of 80 anglers :oops: If I do I will have to announce my retirement from the world of match fishing!!!

It was tough alright but hopefully the massive amounts of undersize fish that were landed is a good thing.. for the future. South Shore's comp in Feb will be tough, not normally an ideal month for match fishing, or any beach fishing. With some luck the conditions will be better for it than yesterday. Myself and Chris were lucky enough to get into the prizes yesterday :wink: fair play to Henry's for putting up €1500 in prizes, some amount to be fair.

Just to say I learned a lot yesterday and will take it forward with my match fishing. The thing is you have to be fit to do all the running around. Traces as well opened my eyes (IE) Snood lent and hook size. It was great I would do it all again tomorrow. Well done Lads.

is there a minimum hook size used in opens in leinster?

Phil - no minimum hook size rules apply in Leinster. Most anglers were on size 2's.

I'd also like to echo Roberts comments regarding the impressive and continued commitment of the main sponsor Henry's Tackle. Thanks to his input, one out of every three competing anglers got a prize.

Size 2's for me.

can someone explain how the comps are scored ....

ie : is there a different base score per species , then length ? / weight ? etc ...

are the same rules applied :? in munster ??

Leinster league rules are : All catch and release basis.
5 points per fish plus the length of the fish e.g. a 20 cm dab will get 25 points.

Some fish sizes are capped i.e. dogfish 40 points
Eels under 100 cm 40 points, eels over 100cm 100 points.

The first dog is measured but the length will only be used in the event of a tie ( i.e still only scores 40 points).

The person with the most points in the zone is the winner. If a tie, the person with the most fish, if still a tie the person with the longest fish.

Other provinces and leinster clubs holding non league events can impose their own rules

I know how you feel cookie i got in the head all the way home, telling what i was doing wrong. your putting on to much bait, your casting to far, your not friends with the bigger fish, I'm better than you at fishing, i have to get away from you, you are no competition beside me.However did you ever see so many small fish, i did not count the fish i caught but at a guess i would say it was about 60. Mad i know but how do you get the bigger fish all the tricks were tried and nothing worked. If i had hair i think i would have pulled it out. I hope there is a better stamp of fish for the master angler fish off this weekend
