People: Me, nige, fishinmidget, stevecrow and about 16 others - Galway Bay SAC Open comp

Duration: 1200-1600

Tide: About 2hrs down 2 hrs up

Weather: Atrocious - driving rain and gales

Bait: Lug, mack, sandeel

Rigs: 3 hook boom rig, lots of bling

Results: Me: 3 flounder, 7 others caught fish, all flounder except 2 plaice

Catch and Release:: Yes

Report:
We held the postponed last leg of the Master Angler and open comp today, also a qualifier for Connacht Youths for next weekends inter-pro. About 6 juniors and 14 seniors fished.
Weather was appalling - driving rain along the beach, about 3pm the rain stopped and the wind dropped, 5 mins later the wind picks up to gale force again - from the opposite direction! The rain if anything got even heavier...
First cast I had a PB, 38cm flounder on lug tipped with mack, next 2 casts I had 2 25cm flounder, both on sandeel. Then all went quiet, baits came back untouched for the rest of the session.
A few other anglers had fish, all flounder except for 2 small plaice.
Results: WSomehow I managed to win with 3 fish for 98 pts, Shane Gilvarry from Killala 2nd with 3 fish (don't know score), Fergus Collins 3rd with 3 I think for 77. Fergus's grandson was 4th just behind grandad with 73. Pete Atkins won Master Angler with 1 fish as the others behind him in the standings all blanked.
Best of luck to the junior team for next weekend, hope ye get more fish up north lads!

Oh, BTW, Steve blanked... sorry Steve!

bradan i had a small turbot on my last cast to save the blank :D

Nice one Corby - I didn't realise that. Surprised to see any turbot with all the fresh water coming in from the stream. At least you didn't blank anyway...
:D

i was going to say i wasnt that close to the stream - but then again the line was a 90 degress to me peg - 6oz GRIP me ar$e - going towards the stream fill

with the conditions there the freshwater was getting well spread about alright :D

when i said "took me for a walk" i ment it flew away and i had to "walk" after it.

it looked like there was something really interesting up on the hill with everyone turned in that direction and no one looking at the rod tips - wind was shocking!

the only respite was to turn your back to it for a while - could just lean into it at one stage and it kept me up!

Mon Jan 08, 2007 4:03 pm

Yeah I was using 7oz grippers and just about holding bottom apart from the odd encounter with weed

People keep telling me that Lettergesh fishes best on the incoming tide, but thats the third time in a row now that I've had good fishing on the ebb tide and then its all gone quiet after low tide....

Mon Jan 08, 2007 4:06 pm

i think fishing the ebb isint too bad - its the turn when things get really quiet - if you noticed yesterday another round of fish were all caught in the last 3/4 - 1/2 hr as the tide was flowing again

i dont mind blanking.. at least i got it over with for this year

as for wind and rain... terrible.. rained 95% of the time we were there..

i made a video clip out there too..

you can hear the wind..
and see it moving the surface water on the beach

you should ad steve that was at the very end when it stopped raining! - the wind is eerie!

thought it was very ironic that when we were finishing up the sun comes out!

Not a chance! Don't think I'd catch too many salmon or brown trout on lugworm... :)
