Report:

The long awaited and much anticipated Carrick Open arrived today. Conor C and myself headed up and met with Norfolk & Goode and also met Pete from Donegal. A great turnout on the day with over 88 anglers taking part.

A lot of fish were caught, mostly flounder with a few coalies and turbot making an appearance.

I managed a huge flounder, maybe even a PB!!! - see below.

Conor C managed 2 flounder, 22 & 24cms for an overall 6th place amongst the juniors - he came home with a new seat box, a life jacket and a voucher for Belfast Angling Centre. He was happy as dog with two mickeys!!

Congrats to N&G who won our zone with 7 fish - he collected two very nice prizes - I'll let him tell you about those.....

The overall winner was Stephen Brennan from Dublin - very well done Stephen (20+ fish - I think).

A big, big thank you to Carrick Beach and Rockers SAC for putting on a wonderful event with the best collection of prizes I have ever seen - great show guys - I will defo be back.

I'll await my prize for the specimen below.....

I thought it was a leaf until I looked closely at it.......

Fantastic outing, and to think at the start of the week I was having second thoughts around fishing it.

Well here goes Flounders: 4 of, 27, 24, 24, 26cm's. Turbot 1 of, 24. Colie 2 of 21, 23. All returned to fight another day and to grow into being another PB for Jude

The amount of 19.5cm fish I returned was serious. Without any problem I must have returned 15+ and some more a great deal smaller.

Again CBARSAC have done themselves proud. The array of prizes for the ballot and the winners was unbelievable.

Again thanks CBARSAC I'll definately be back next year. 8)

Well done also to Stephen Brennan for winning. 20+ fish counting, fantastic showing of what can be done. And this is week in and week out! Superb. (I'm glad I wasn't in his zone  )

Really enjoyable day out, was well impressed with the beach, fished well even if it was flat calm. Finished with five flounder and a coalie but had feck all until the last hour when it really came on. Dont know where I finished but had the pleasure/misfortune of being pegged beside Stephen Brennan......22 fish i think he had......taught me a lesson on how to catch fish  ! My hand was sore from signing his bloody card!

Fair play to the Carrick club it was an extremely well run event, the prizes seemed to be excellent, lots for the juniors too. Was good to meet yourself Jude, the rag as always was excellent :) It was a pity I wasnt pegged beside you....would have been a good chance to slag you bout that speci flounder

Sounds like a decent day out folks. I had the same misfortune as you Pete at the Munster Open at Tramore.... The guy is unreal.

Mon Dec 18, 2006 7:16 pm

how many dogs were caught on the beach?

Mon Dec 18, 2006 7:19 pm

pete, what were the baits that were working best down your end? it all seemed to be rag tipped with mack up our way for most.
what were the most successful baits for all entrants on the day???

Mon Dec 18, 2006 7:24 pm

there was 3 dogs on the beach and i had 2 and the guy beside me had 1 it was the same up my way mainly rag tipped with mac but i got my flounder on lug tipped with mac all at distance too...couldn't hit anythin in close :( but still i was happy with the 2 doggies and the flounder at 29 the whiting was only 24 all for 143pts

Mon Dec 18, 2006 7:59 pm

Phil, dont appear to be a lot of dogs areound at the mo.

Where were the bulk of the fish caught?

Mon Dec 18, 2006 8:33 pm

I might as well have used Mars Bars as bait

For those who did catch, I believe rag/mack combo worked best.

All my fish came to Rag and Mack.

I tried differing combo's with sandeel, squid, crab, lug with very little or no fish.

Rig: 3 hook Flapper with booms. Booms were metal for a change. I normally use the avis plastic booms but thought I would try the metal one's for a change. I hear they are supposed to give off electrical currents that attract fish?

The rig was approx 10ft, with the droppers approx 18inches. 1st boom approx 6 inches from the lead link, 2nd boom approx 6 feet from that and then the 3rd boom right up at the leader. It worked for me this time. :o

Hooks: size 1 fine wire with two 5mm glow beads above. These were charged as the evening got darker.
I'm unsure if this was the difference in the catch rate at night, but again it worked for me.

All fished off a Century SRE 5m rod and a zziplex powertex bass rod. with 2-3oz leads used to let it roll about.

Not a problem Sandman, thread looks much better now that alot of irrelevant stuff has been removed.

Congratulations to everyone that won prizes at the C.B.R.S.A.C. Open 2006

A big thank you goes out to all our sponsors and people that donated prizes, they really made the day.( with the mod/admin's approval perhaps we could list them and give them the credit they deserve :?: )

Some members of the club have been putting in long hours to make things run as well as they did, they deserve a pat on the back.

I must agree, the people who put their money and time into angling should get our full support.
