People: 3-4

Duration:6 hours each day

Tide: 3.30 pm/4 ish

Weather:brilliant

Bait:Lug & rag

Rigs: standard 2 hook traces

Results: 5 bass, 1 codling, 2 nice flounders, 1 nice plaice, lots of coalies

Catch and Release:: most

Report:

Fished from 3-6 pm Friday. Caught 3 bass between 2-3.5 lbs plus coalies and plaice. Non stop action

After a nice dinner went back out from 10.30-2.30 am. Got the cod and good size coalies. Lost a lovely bass

Back again on Saturday form 1.30-7pm. Got two nice bass around 3ish. There were thousands of small coalies. I have no doubt that if they were not around we would have got more bass. I was fishing 2 rods and no sooner had they hit the water than I would have 2 coalies on each. I missed 2 bass. One of the lads was catching 3 coalies at a time.

That evening we had 1 baked bass, two fried flatfish and cod plus coalies fried with onions and mushrooms.

Before people start moaning about killing fish I reckon that we kept 7 fish and caught over 100. That is catch and release.

Plaice

Hi Arthur, Whiting Bay used to be great for plaice but I have not caught one there in years. Ballyquin was great for big flats years ago but they seem to be a bit thin on the ground now. I even caught brill there at one time. Cormac Walsh told me that he dived outside Ballymacart a number of years ago and saw many plaice and sole not too far out.

I suspect that tangle nets did quite a bit of damage to the flatfish population over the years.

Clonea

Hi Arthur, I will have to try Clonea in the near future. Seems to be a brilliant beach.
