Can anyone confirm or deny reports that there are Signs on the beach saying Anglers go Home and no Rod fishing allowed!!!

Seems that the local people are taking a stand against the Drift Net Ban?

I fished there last Sunday and there were no signs, must have been put up this week.

Hi

There are a few contankerous individuals in that area who have indicated that "foreign" anglers are not welcome... and by foreign I mean anyone from except them! I came across one heading down past the beach towards rocks that are a known bassing hotspot at a certain stage of the tide. Unpleasant little git - we told him to go away...

Okay, to be fair, it helped he was smaller than me and the brother, which is quite difficult in my case and very difficult in the brother's case but he managed it on both counts :D - it also helped that he did not know which car was mine

I am not aware that drift netters were of a similar mind, to my knowledge he was a local rod angler but he could have been selling them on as readily as any other poacher could / can in the current climate...

FWIW...

This is a ridiculous situation. The signs should be pulled down and dumped. This is a free land and no local lunatic has a right to stop anyone fishing. If he tries I would suggest dumping him in the surf!!!!!!!!!!

I was down there today and can confirm that this is true.
I am married to a Passage woman so know most of the people down there.
I asked one of the locals what was the story with the signs, more in the way of making conversation than confronting him and was told that I/we were not welcome as anglers were responsible for pushing to get the net fishing banned.
At first I thought that he was taking the mick and laughed at him.
When I did the mood of the conversation quickly changed. No matter how much I tried to show him the error in his judgment he would not give an inch. I left well enough alone and walked away.
I immediately rang a FRIEND that lives down there to make some sense of this and was stunned when I was told the same from him.
The phone call ended with me being told that the next person fishing down there will be physically removed from the beach.

 That is one of the most ridiculous things i have ever heard!
Seriously do they really think that they can physically remove anglers from the beach?!!

Seems so. I'm tempted to go down there now just to see how far they will go

I'd personally be very curious as to how far they were prepared to go. It has to be the most outrageous thing I've heard on a beach to be honest. Absolute halfwits...... Do these people think they have a god given right to the sea its shores and everything that swims in it over and above joe angler?

I can't describe how angry that little tale makes me......  I'm amazed that they think this is an OK way of protesting.

absolute madness - where are the authorities on this one

Sat Nov 11, 2006 2:06 am

Lads the locals in Passage have been hostile to outsiders since i was a nipper,i was down there when i was 9 or 10 with my father(one of my earliest fishing trips  ) and they came out shouting to clear off(OK in words alot stronger then this  ) but they tend to clear off once they run out of obscenities....just watch u'r cars  As for the ban on drift netting they ran a 2 page article on the local rag in Cork the other day but if i remember they only ran 1 column on the ban drift netting protest which had twice the amount of people there :? For a minority group they make some noise.

Like a lot of the small fishing areas most of these lads are on the dole, poaching salmon and bass and selling them on and spending the rest of the time in the pub. Well known fact that most salmon are caught when the season is closed. Heard a few years ago a fisherman not far from the above area who was also on the fisheries board was visited by the authorities regarding poaching for which he was well known but not convicted. He ran from the Quay with his Quarry when he heard they were coming and hid in the wardrobe in his house in the hope of not being caught. He was in his 60's at the time. Says a lot for the area??? Close breeding is a dangerous thing, be careful, be very careful. They have finally got what they deserve, they never think of tomorrow.

If that's the case, then they shouldn't be drawing attention to themselves. They're on the radar now.

I hope they're not depending on angling tourism down there like they make out they were from drift netting. Otherwise, they're in a world of hurt.....
