Report:

Headed to De Wall for the first cod bash of the season this afternoon after having heard good reports on the mark in recent days. I arrived shortly before Paul and tackled up the Surfblaster RuffStuff and Supermag and horsed out a full peeler on a single hook clip down as far as I could into the channel. I left that set up while I tackled up my latest acquisition, the new 16' Daiwa Longbeam. Fitted an Emcast loaded with 30lb Power Pro, loaded another single hook clip down with peeler and let fly......wow.... :D With a minimum of fuss, 7ozs of lead and a full peeler went hammering out with a simple overhead thump. Await the review in a week or two.

It hadnt been out there 2 minutes before I had a nice nod, swiftly followed by a couple more. Lifted the Longbeam and leaned into the bite, to feel the welcome dour nodding fight of my first shore codling of the 2006 winter season. :D . Happy days, 16 feet of rod coupled with the Emcast made short work of winching the fish over the reef, first one of the year, a nice plump little fella of just under 2lbs or so.

Paul arrived a minute or two later as I was sending out another bait, and began tackling up. I went back to the Surfblaster to check it as it had been out for quite some time and was surprised to lift into a weighty enough fish which must have been just sitting on the bait. Well, sods law isnt it, as soon as I had that fish on the move back towards me, the other rod started bouncing up and down. I had to give Paul a shout to hit into the fish for me whilst I pulled in the first one. Frenetic stuff indeed, and we go fishing to relax.... :D Lifted out the first one anyhow quickly and took over from Paul on my second rod. 2 more nice codling lay on the bank, 1 just over 2, the other just under 3.

Things quietened down a small bit with a couple of pout and poor cod arriving to various rods before cod number 4 eventually graced me with his appearance, a nice plump fish around the 2 1/2 pound mark. A whiting and another pout or two followed before time was called before the tide run could begin making a nuisance of itself.

A pleasant little session, it was like we'd never been away to be honest, normal service resumed! For the record, frozen crab was useless as was frozen black lug and squid. Fresh peeler all the way lads I'm afraid. Some pics below, taken on phone so apologies on the quality.

good to hear the fishing is back on down there.... had 2 disasters down there in the last 4 weeks :oops: ...looks packed down there with all those cars :cry: ...i hope to get down there over the next few days...no sign of raysbream :lol: :lol:

The wall itself wasnt busy, just a lot of cars around ya know. There were probably a dozen or so altogether fishing. Im sure you dont need me to tell you how to fish De Wall but for anyone else who is thinking of travelling down, bear the following in mind.

- The wall fishes the whole way along but I personally prefer the grassy patch, in particular, by the life buoy. (This is MY spot...please leave it alone.... :D )

- You need to fish 120/90 mins or so before either the top or bottom of the tide to make life comfortable for yourself. (unfortunately, thats when everyone else will turn up so it may be worth arriving that bit earlier to get a good spot.)

- Crab is king here, particularly fresh crab however come November/December that will be scarce. Fear not, frozen/fresh black lug and squid combined makes an excellent bait.

- You need to cast at least 100 yards (more in parts) to get into the codling holding channel. How do you know if you're in it? Well, no bites means no channel... :D

- Big baits need big hooks, leave plenty of point showing, it can help avoid guthooking...strike on second set of knocks.

- There are some dirty pigs who visit the wall. Do yourself and the reputation of our sport a favour and take 2 minutes to clean the area around where you intend to fish. I know you shouldnt have to but there are some thoughtless fickers out there.

- Get down there and enjoy it...! If there is another shore mark that can produce the volume of codling as here I'd be amazed.

- Please be sensible when it comes to taking fish home, the little ones will go back if you treat them carefully, lets not spoil it for the future. No point complaining when (and it frequently does..) it gets trawled after You've gone home with a bucketful of little uns.

So thats what i'm doing wrong.....everything :lol: :lol: .great advice pete. :wink: As for the rubbish left down here it's only a matter of time before the locals are up in arms again :( (the bins are helping though) also because your fishing from the footpath it helps to be friendly to people passing it's good P.R. :wink: (we all get the stupid statements "R de mackeral in etc." :shock: ) so as much as it hurts please grin and bear it.

One other thing....this is no place for anything smaller than 5oz leads. Indeed I have on occasion used 250g leads in a bid to combat tide run but usually see sense and leave before that becomes necessary! Bring a range anyway just in case, 5s 6s 7s etc. Theres nothing more annoying than your neighbour fishing with a 3 or a 4 and constantly crossing your line.

Meeting strange people on the internet, i'm sure i was warned about that by someone(it involved moonlit beaches and actionman :shock: ) :lol: :lol: ...Nice one Pete i'll let you know when i can :D .. i'm sure some of the others including some of the Waterford lads might be up for that "searching for 10lb cod" :shock: .

I have yet to see a codling up this end of the country - I'm planning to get out next week to try for some.

Where is the most accurate tide info for "De Wall". Is it Ringaskiddy, Cobh or am I totally out, have to give it a day trip to see can it match the hype :lol:

I always use Cobh as a guide myself, close proximity means there shouldnt be any noticeable difference. I could be wrong but it could only be a few minutes at most.

Cobh, seeing as you'll be looking directly across from it, Well Rushbrook is Cobh isn't it?, and for that little piece of advice you must try and help me catch my first cod!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah your a gent Pete, thanks alot, I'm gonna fish it before the end of the month, unfortunately the shoals up here are conspicous in their abscence so far, I've been out 3 times in what I would call favourable conditions and I've only had 2 modest codling. Will try pick some neap tides after a dry spell if possible!!!

Saturday Oct 28th tides and weather permitting, a few of us will head down for a bash, hope to see some of ye there!

Fished from 90mins or so prior to LW up to maybe an hour after with Phanover. It was a fairly early start on the Saturday morning but there were still a fair few early birds down there.

Not a lot to report I'm afraid, there were maybe a dozen or so fishing and in the couple of hours or so I was there, there was one fish caught. By me :D . A codling of around 3lb or so. I was using the best of fresh peeler and also tried lug and squid but that was the sum total. I'm not lying when I say there wasnt another fish caught, the lack of action was chronic. We werent even getting bites from the tiddler whiting/poor cod.

I left but Paul stayed on for an hour or so and managed to winkle a codling out for himself too, again, he saw no other fish coming in. Place must have been trawled out of it or something. Its highly unusual to see it as quiet as that. I dont know if the flooding tide brought anymore fish through after we had left but I wasnt hanging around and digging out the 250g weights to find out....!

Still, it was a grand morning to be out all the same and a nice codling made a tasty breakfast.
