Reports required from Glin to Black Head

Mon Oct 02, 2006 2:54 pm

Hi there.

My mate and I are coming over this week to stay at Kilkee and will be fishing marks from Glin to Black Head. I would appreciate any information on the following marks:

Glin (the Pier and the Castle)
Beach at Kilimer Ferry Terminal
Faunmore (just south of Doolin)
Doolin Point
Ailladie (Ballyreen)
Trawlvealacalaha (south of Fanore beach)
Black Head (either side)

We came over about the same time last year and besides small stuff from Cappagh Pier, Mackerel at Castle Point and what I reckon was a lucky Bull from the quay opposite Inishmurry just south of Killadysert (is this the same place as the Shannon Fishery Board call New Quay?), we had a pretty quiet time.

Looking at the maps, Kilkerin Point to the west of Labasheeda looks tempting, especially as it looks straight down the barrell of the Shannon, but has anyone tried here? Is it any good, full of weed or tide way too strong to contemplate?

We we still be able to get Mackerel at Castle Point or is there a less dangerous place where these can still be caught? We are coming over with the intention of getting Rays this year, although my mate would dearly love a Bull like mine, so if there are any other marks you know are fishing hot at the moment, we will be most appreciative.

Many thanks for any info you can provode to make our two weeks enjoyable.

I haven't really fished clare much this year so I'll try and give as best advise I can. Poulnasharry fished well mainly at low water last autumn for ray and cappagh pier produced ray as well. As for mackerel you can head down to ross for lower cliffs which make reeling up easier. I don't like drops myself but I'd always go to Dunlickey (aka castle point). Kildysart pier is called new quay on the shannon fb site and it is signposted as inish murray quay after the island it faces. I can't say I've ever heard of anyone fishing under the castle in glin but the point to the west of here is known as barrets house strand and a recognised mark but I haven't heard any report in recent years or ever fish it. I've seen someone fish glin pier once and the probable reason it ever gets fished is they built a pier there. You can fish the layby up from here at all stages on the tide but the stages near low water are best but be prepare to lose gear.

Let us know how you get on and by jesus that was some bull huss.

Thanks for the info Donagh. We popped into Bourkes Tackle to begin with and Michael pointed us in a number of directions. I tried Poulnasherry a couple of times, once at low and once at high but I think I was in the wrong place as I fished right out into the narrowest part and all I got was weed and saw one seal that popped his head up not more than 6ft in front of me. Not sure who was the most surprised!

I learned my lesson at Cappagh as I thought (as with most shore marks I fish) the further out you go the better your chances, but all I got was tide race and rocks. A couple of local lads turned up on our first night and one of them pulled out a 6lb Thorny first cast right under my nose! Was funny on hearing their view on Yatesy (Alan that is) as they seem to be pretty universal.

We also tried Ross for about 5mins, that was until we lost all our feathers with nothing in return. Like the look of the gulleys round there for wrasse. We initially bought a few Mackerel from the fish shop at Carrigaholt, but these weren't the freshest we seen so we had to sort something else and Michael led us to Dunlickey. Never fished anywhere like that before, but thankfully 20mins later and a dozen Mackerel and we were sorted. Couldn't beleive it when a group of Albanians(?) turned up with fixed spools, broken rods and 10lb line! Thought we had left all that far behind fishing so far away from home!

Thanks for confirming Inishmurry is New Quay. I thought it was but wasn't sure. Only assume the Bull was a lucky fish as the channel was crab alley or what! Lug lasted about 5secs while Mackerel lasted about 2mins. No idea how much it weighed but hammered down my 11lb scales and beyond. We reckon it was about 18lb in the end and certainly made the week. My mate nearly wet himself when it broke surface!

Thanks for the info around Glin. Yatesy has pointed us in the direction of all the marks I've mentioned, so if we bomb we can give him another slagging off!

Will be sure to post our results as soon as we get back.

Jim.
