Dun Laoighaire Pier, Dublin, 02/09/06

Sun Sep 03, 2006 5:53 pm

People: Me, Idren & Sistren

Duration: 8 hours

Tide: Fished outgoing and incoming

Weather: Heavy showers, sunny bits and very stong westerly winds for a long time

Bait: Rag, frozen sand eel & fresh mackeral

Rigs: 4oz bomb/gripper, 2 hook trace.

Results: 29 mackeral, 6 LSD, 3 small plaice, 7 small dabs, 1 good size dab, 1 wrasse and several very small poor cod & whiting (I think)

Catch and Release:: Kept only 9 mackeral shared with my Mam and for bait later in the year. Everythng else went back smiling, I flatten the barb on the hook end makes it easy to get the little creatures off and saves having to handle the auld macks who apparently have very sensitive skin. Also means I lose quite a few but it all fits together in the greater scheme of things.

Report: Ended up in Dun Laoigharie again due to circumstances beyond my control but turned out to be a great day. Arrived just after 10am, walking up the pier in a downpour spotted a shoal of mackeral inside the harbour between the elbow steps and the first new breakwater.
Havent seen this for an age, anyway had one three hook set of lures between us. Lashed these on one rod and a silver spiner on another.
Spent 45 mins walking up down following the shoal. Couldn't see what they were after but every couple of minutes they would surface. Casting into the shoal just scattered them so it was casting and waiting for them to swim in our direction, then hoping the lures tempted them. Managed to get 9 fish but watching them was more interesting. And there wasn't another fishing soul on the pier. :D
The rest of the day turned up regular mackeral taking rag and sand eel. Doggies made an appearance on the low tide. The wind picked up after lunch so went fishing into the harbour for a while until the wind died down again, got some mackeral, 2 lsd and some small dabs.
Just before we left my brother got an unsual double of a nice dab and a wrasse.
A good day, nice variety of species, no record breakers but all gems in their own right.
