Report:Dunree - never fished this venue but was impressed with Rab's report earlier in the month and thought we would have a go at the thornies. Armed with Petekd's directions we made the trip to Donegal and located the "beaut of a bay". However, after that it was all downhill as we ended up going round in circles trying to work out whether it was the point below the fort or the point to the right of the bay which was a two day camel ride away. I was convinced it was the one to the right esp whenever the directions meant crossing a river but the rest of the lads were not convinced. Ended up fishing the rocks to the left of the bay but not much doing except a large sea trout splashing in front of us. As the tide was rising and there was a possibility of getting cut off we packed up and headed for the opposite side of the bay. Thought about trying to get round to the point but after a lot of hard work we gave up and fished the beach... blanked. Would love to try this mark again accompanied by someone who has fished it and knows a few shortcuts!!!!

Dunseverick - One of my favourite marks... never fails. As soon as we started we were into fish with Matty hitting the gurnards on rag and mack. Dogs made an appearance shortly afterwards with the largest close to specimen weight, unfortunately we had no scales. Fishing was pretty consistent but bites were hard to come by around the high tide mark. However a change of tactics (two / three hooks on booms) loaded with rag tipped with mack got the fish going again with small flatties making up the majority of the catch. Surprise of the day was catching a mackerel on a sandeel and rag wrap on a 2/0 hook!!

Total for the day - Matty: 8 gurnards, 1 mack, 4 plaice. Me: 5 dogs, 2 mack, 1 dab and 4 plaice.

Hiya Stevie, It is indeed the point to the right and as you rightly say, a complete camel ride to get out to it. Well worth the trip all the same. Give it another lash sometime, it doesnt usually disappoint. As for Shortcuts, the only one there is is crossing the beach at low water and cutting out most of the bracken flailing, hill climbing, rock tripping etc!

thanks for the response lads - with regard to Dunree how far can you get round to that point at low water crossing the beach, as it doesn't look like the tide goes out far enough to prevent you from still having to do a bit of climbing, beating your way through the heather and treking over the mountain :!:

With regard to Dunseverick, I park in the lay-by opposite two or three houses (there is a telephone box at one end of the lay-by) hop over the fence opposite and then follow the coastal path to the left crossing a wee bridge and over a stile before going to the right and following a wee track down and across the rocks to the furthest point. It is comfortable fishing in the right conditions but you can only get a max of three fishing on it. Casting straight out from the point in a clockwise direction will put you over clean ground but from 3 o'clock onwards its rough.... better spinning or using a float for some good pollock / coalies.

I ARRIVED BOUT HALF TIDE AND WAS ABLE TO WALK RIGHT OUT OT THE BASE OF THE HEADLAND TO A SMALL STEEP SANDY COVE BUT IT WAS A STEEP SLIPPERY CLIMB UP ON TO THE HEAD SO I FOLLOWED A SHEEP PATH TO THE RIGHT UP INTO THE HEATHER WHICH TOOK U UP ON TO THE TOP OF THE HEAD sorry bout the caps  i just noticed, maybe at dead low you could get straight on the head

I have never been able to just get straight onto the head, usually, if possible, where the cliffs start to rise is nip up there onto the sheep tracks. It does however cut out an awful load of hassle all the same. 6 foot high bracken is no fun to be dealing with all the way along the side of the bay.
