me and tommy were casting to that patch of weed/junk were we got the bass . T. said i,m stuck, i walked over to free it, seen fish :o :shock: ,ran a bit, fish took of, and beached itself on the sand bank we were standing on, lots of panic, managed to get it out. went to get F.Y.C.M to take a pic. tommy got rope are draged it up beach.
asked him to release it, he wouldnt. :cry:
i abandoned ship on the way in.(we had gone by boat)
if i had hooked i would have released it..
it weighed 35 k.g./79lb. when gutted,
it measured 4;6 long and 3;2 across.
he gave it to a pub/restaurant on the quay..
it wasnt a skate, black and blubbery, tail end bit like a monk fish, very round at the front, it seemed to be able to shock at first.???????????

That fish is weights are accurate would have obliterated the the current Irish record which stands at 40kg from Achill in 2002.

Well done Cortaz - I was the other angler on the Cunnigar yesterday - the pic above - Atlantic Electric Ray looks exactly like the beast ! It must have been a foot thick !

It wasn't a great day for fishing tho' very blustery and the water was quite weedy.

Francis (FMCN) told me he had a 4 pounder at high tide that morning.
I believe he went to Rosslare today to catch some tope !

I had 2 takes from schoolies earlier on, both let go. I was using a dexter wedge to get some casting distance into a very stiff breeze.
After walking all the way to the water's edge, out past the artificial mussel beds (you need to bring your walking legs for the Cunnigar) I had a few casts but the water was so shallow .........
I really must get a digital camera - that ray was the biggest thing I've ever seen caught from the shore on a rod and line.

Anyway on my way back I had a last few casts into the channel to use up the last of my frozen sand eels and I got a 7 - 8 lb bass - biggest I ever had. After the wind, the weed and all the walking It made my day - he's back in the channel now.

Holding out for the elusive 10+ pounder

Nice fish Aido. Did you see the pics I posted and the nice bass Cortaz caught. I did drive over to Rosslare point. Left Waterford at 3 AM and was on the point by 5.30 AM in a serious Northerly wind. If you know this mark it is not the place to be with that wind direction. Anything from the South or SW is fine and sheltered. So decided to call it quits and make the most of light early morning Traffic for the long drive home.

If as suggested it weighed around 120 lbs, it would have smashed the current record 88 lbs by close on 50% which means it would have almost certainly won the ISFC prize for biggest improvement on a record too.

I wonder if it was in good health when it was caught, as I for one would not want to be handling a full grown electric ray! Any thoughts?

i think it may have been swept into the bay on the very big spring tides
4.2m.
it was in a gully/through about 3ft deep. the water inside/outside was 1 ft. 200 meters off the beach there was a large shole of large sandeel in the gully also and some bass
it did not swim very fast when hooked, i think it may have been foulhooked,
the hook was 4/5in. from its mouth.
after the first 3/4 "shocks" it,s batteries went flat, it continued to shock
but much weaker
( next a tuna off the beach!!!) 8) 8) :lol:

40lbs? would it really have that much in weight of guts alone?

I once saw a marbled electric ray caught(in spain) that was 70lbs which looks around the same size as that fish, i would have guessed more 90lbs than 120
