Holiday Report 15th July – 29th July

Week 2 (Saturday July 22nd – Friday 28th July)

Saturday 22nd July 13:00 – 16:00
Tide: Flood

I had a chat with Arthur and arranged to meet up at 14:00 on the Saturday down on a local mark. It would be a couple of hours before high tide and we would fish up until high and then switch tactics and spin from some nearby rocks for an hour. We had cloud cover, the wind was a steady Force 4, from the south west and rain wasn’t far behind. We talked tactics and he showed me a good method which worked in the area. First couple of casts and Arthur had a brace of bass to ledgered lugworm. Mean while I was still getting to grip with the method he had described. Another 2 bass were produced but not by me and then the bites slackened right off. Around the same time, the cloud cleared, the sun came out and the wind dropped. We called it a day.

Went around the Dingle on Monday/Tuesday so didn’t fish. Serious fishing had to be done when I got back!!!

Tuesday 25th July 18:00 – 21:00
Tide: Flood

Met up again and gave it another go, in all I think there were 5 or 6 anglers including Ferg who wondered over to say hello and then announced he caught a 5 pounder! In all it was disappointing (but happy to see the smile on Ferg's face) so we wondered over to the rocks to spin where both Arthur and myself had a big bass follow our lure. He was using a bass bullet and me a Yo Zuri popper.

Wednesday 26th July 04:30 – 09:00
Tide: Flood - HT

Fished the same area, baited up with lug and around 05:00 had my first bite of the day. After a nice little scrap to my disbelief a nice plump 1.5 lb GiltHead Bream came in to my grasp. A new species, I had broken my duck at last. The sea was calm, sun coming up, slight cloud cover and a gentle SW wind. Next couple of casts saw lightening fast plucks and during this time I landed my second Bream, a brace for me. Both returned. At 06:30 the bass came on and I think I had 6 to 8 up to 2.5lb. Again my first Irish bass where finally showing. Nothing more was caught as I had run out of worms, so I headed back to where we had the big bass follow our surface lures the previous day. Well in exactly the same place around 08:00 there was an almighty lunge, the rod bent over and the reel gave out line. Run on and he knew where to head, so I applied side ways pressure to prevent him from getting refuge amongst the boulders and then the inevitable happened. The line went slack. I thought Ok he may have turned and could be running towards me so I frantically reeled in to try and keep the line taught but nothing was on the end! I reeled in and inspected my Yo Zuri. It was Ok but both trebles were shrouded in slimy weed. Had the bass hit the lure with it covered in weed and hence the run but no real connection with the trebles?

Well that was a bugger, for that bass was a double!

Thursday 27th July 04:30 – 09:00
Tide: Flood - HT -1

Out again, same tactics, less fish about at first and more sun out. Around 07:00 I had a series of lightening quick taps and a fish was on. This was really fighting and the fight was even better due to the braid. After reaching the shallows the fish went beresk and at one stage even leaped straight out of the water. After a good scrap I had yet another new species. A golden grey mullet of around 3 – 3.5 lb on ledgered lug. What a nice fish and as I beached him I thought I’d get the camera and take a couple of pictures, so I went down to the water and rinsed him off but he took me by surprise and with a twist was out of my hands and away! What a banana  There were more of the same bites but I did not connect.

That was to be my final fish of the trip. I did meet up with Arthur on the Friday night for a chat in to the wee small hours and I would like to thank him yet again for his and everyone else’s hospitality during my stay. Cheers lads.

Now then, how I can I get the missus to move over to Ireland?

Sounds like you had a nice stay my friend.

I've just turned deep green with envy.

I like your writing. It leaves some tempting images in my head.
