Fri Jul 21, 2006 12:38 pm

People: Me and 2 brothers

Duration: 12.30-8.30pm

Tide: H/W 14:00

Weather: V. Warm with hazy sunshine & fresh breeze

Bait: Ragworm

Rigs: Slider float rigs

Results: 120+ Wrasse up to 3lb , 5 small pollack

Report:

Decided to take a spin to St. John's Point for a change of venue and give the brothers a chance of a few fish! Definitely glad I headed here, as from the first bait hitting the water to the last there were plenty of fish on the take.

Having heard there were specimen wrasse here in numbers, i was happy enough to stick with the float rigs all day as the sport was good on light gear and it gave us the chance to explore a fair bit of the area.

Most fish were about 1lb, some a lot smaller and a fair number muh bigger, however we couldnt find the bigger fish unfortunately, but it was a great day's craic enjoyed by all.

The pollack were fairly small biggest no more than 1.5lb.

Had intented dropping a bait for conger but no one else there seemed to be finding any mackeral so didn't bother trying for them.

Nice fishing

Have you tried crab peeler, soft or hardback. they will sort out the better wrasse and if you fish a stinger rig you will get the small fish too.

i gave up using rag for wrasse getting plagued with small fish. a switch to crab really brought the better fish to over 5lbs. worth some missed bites for the quality fish IMO

Thats definately true, crab sorts out the better fish, but whats a stinger rig?

Forget about catching wrasse at St Johns point - Unless you just want to catch fish just for the sake of it.
There are so many wrasse there all year round (In shoals)
That it is boring after a while, They end up being a pest when you are targeting other fish. I have even caught Wrasse spinning with sandeel aimed at pollack.
