Had a few very enjoyable lure sessions at the weekend on the rough ground in North Wexford. First Off Saturday Morning was out for a mornings tuition with Jim Hendrick who runs a Sportfisihng Company ( http://www.bassfishing.ie )from his guesthouse in Wexford town. Jim took myself, a fishing buddy and his youngfella out to show us the ropes regarding lure fishing for bass. Jim went through everything with us from how to use different lures properly and in what situations, really informative. Then it was on wih the fishing, the three of us tried surface poppers and them working after a few minutes careful supervision we worked them well. Good oul Jim fished for 20 minutes and had a beautiful 5lb bass (returned) and missed another one. I had a heart stopping moment when a bass slammed my popper about 8 feet from the rock i was standing on and knocked it clean out of the water

After the session Jim brought us back to the guesthouse and threw sambos an tea at us till we were stuffed, then a "bass class" which was unbelieveably informative, about tactics, times to fish, and fish behaviour, alot of variables I never though mattered were covered and i'm fairly confident my chuck it and chance it days are over!

Well I had to put what I learned into practice so I headed to a mark last night. Had a wind knot on my braid so I had to change spools to the only one I had, 8lbmono, not ideal for fishing over rocks and kelp. clipped on small surface plug and away I went. First cast got a great bang off a garfish that leapt out of the water and came off, encouraging start, the plug was working. Nothing for a while so i tried a "Krocadile" lure i bought in the states. Has a small schoolie on for a minute but he came off in the strong flow. A few minutes later had another small one just over a lb. Waht a scrap on the light tackle, even hung me up behind a rock after taking line  but I moved to get a different angle on him and some leaping and thrashing had him out.

Was getting a bit dark so began the clamber back across the rocks having a few casts as i went. Found a lovely little spot and decided to have a few casts. Bang! into another schoolie, came off after a few seconds but there was a few fish moving, had a few other takes but then on my "last cast" well my 10th one actually, the light rod i was using whacked over and line peeled of the reel. It was too dark to see but from the splashing i could hear and the drag screeching I knew it was decent fish. After about 10 minutes I landed a bass a shade over 5 lb! Best news is that both fish are still there for you to catch, both went back very strongly.....Cheers Jim :D

Lava - Jim's contact details are on http://www.bassfishing.ie, get in quick though because he can be booked for months of tides at a time, especially from european sport fishing enthusiasts, most of whom are return visitors on their 2nd/3rd visit, nuff said!

Funny that Bradan, I'll be spending less time than I ever did fishing down there. I used to spend countless hours targetting bass with bait and lures in the same venues that i picked the bass up at the weekend, usually just scoring with small schoolies or dogfish, the occasinal codling if lucky in the rough. Several factors meant I was fishing the wrong way, at the wrong time in the wrong place, but hopefully I've a better understanding of their habits now. Well I'll soon find out!
