Report:thought i'd give greys point a blast seein i caught a few mackerel a couple of weeks back. didn't know what to expect as the tide was very low, fully out. but i noticed the frantic bird activity and thought i could be in here. first cast i was in and it just carried on that way, fast and furious and loads of fun!! most fish were on the small side but its really good to see so many big shoals so soon. i really think we're all gonna have a great summer's fishing this year. :D

hi jonny, i've definately noticed the increase this year. i was just saying to the brother-in-law this morning how i've never seen shoals like it so early in the year!!! also jonny, don't know if u read my thread but i caught some really big mackerel from orlock head. yet again trailing them in left, right and centre!!! just wondering if the mackerel shoals r so big so early in the year is the rest of r summers fishing gonna be great??? i've never seen the amount of fry and sandeels ever like i seen today!!!

Hi guys,

Ive lived by the sea and grew up mackerel fishing and the recent fry/sandeel and mackerel activity I havent seen for 20 odd years. I was out the other day standing up to my knees in water surrounded by sandeels with mackerel attacking from everywhere, the surface literally boiling! Had a blast landing around 35 on the flyrod.

Every time I`ve looked out the window for the last week or so all i can see is people winding in fish from all around the bay including rock marks that never usually yield mackerel even in season. Surely its all related to the quota being put on the winter commercial fishing? Hope it lasts anyway, great for a bit of quick sport.

Rab i think Marty has just answered your question and reinforced my thoughts of this being a positive change rather than a one off.As for larger mackerel got a few cracking ones yesterday so i think its time drop down to some light tackle and move up a few hook sizes and have some fun.
This may also be a good time to have the heavy gear out. There was a lot of people filleting their fish on the rocks so if this is going to be going on for a while all those carcaces have to bring something about.
