looks like a tompot blenny ,seems to be a few around at the mo ,i think they come inshore to breed at this time of year ,there are wee frills above the eyes ,these normally identify it from most other fish

Thats why I wasn't sure, the thing was bloody huge for a blenny, it was last year so can't remember exact lenght but think around 8 inches, certainly bigger than 5.5 or 6.

Al, didn't go last night, hope to get out tonight but it depends on the weather. If the wind keeps up and the sea is a bit rough or coulered I'll probably give smoothie fishing a miss as I don't want to waste peeler.
However I'll probably still head out with some rag and razor so you never know.

Col, do you fish from the beach to the left of the north pier. We used to call it the murragh. We fished at the monkey poll. Used to be a great spot. Where did you catch the codling from..?

Caught the codling, though only small, from the old pier in Wicklow.
Have given that beach, the murragh, a go once but got nothing but plan to fish it a fair bit this summer. Should provide a good escape from the pier if it gets packed with mackie bashers.

Hi Ray, nope the actual name of the band was tompot blenny, only had 2 singles though :D

Anyway, Mr.Surgenor, you say its the frills above the eye which identify it, I didn't notice any at the time. :) :?
