People: Myself and Suresh Savirajan (local doctor in sligo)
Duration: 3 hours - 8 pm to 11 pm
Tide: LW around 7 pm, big tide, medium swell
Weather: clearing from drizzly rain showers, pleasant evening, light W to WNW breeze
Bait: rubbish! chucked it in after opening it...
Rigs: resorted to using lures only, mainly shallow divers owing to the conditions but changed to deep divers with the filling tide
Results: One decent pollack (3-4lbs) each, both from the same spot.
Report:
Arrived and agreed to fish the headland owing to the low water. Walked around from the pier and followed the trail down past the small cove with the cave, up and over a few hillocks to where the trail has collapsed into the sea. Scrambled down here and set up fishing just west (left) of the offshore island. Fearsome current here - tried bait (sandeels were muck, mutter under his breath) and gave up, switched to lures on a really light spinning rod - new model from UK, wonderfully light and stood up to the challenge well.
Moved to the "hole" after the island - you can not miss it and hit the jackpot there. You can to cast close to the far rocks and to the pinnacle in the middle and risk the lure but the fish are there and in numbers - had a lot of plucks apart from the two fish landed - best to fish from near the cliff face back into the pool as the tide will sweep you off otherwise...
Very pleasant evening. Small boat out and got nothing, obviously looking for mackerel. None about. Tried a few feathers for supper but nada. Slipway at the harbour is now in excellent conditions and 80%-100% available bar really low water on big tides. Some lovely scenery there - anyone ever tried for a bass on the rocks around the beach beside it?
Cheers

A month ago there were plenty of makerel, last time out they were scarce,5 hours to track a few down, covered the whole bay, sligo bay can be like that. Have heard of people targeting bass there but its always a friend of a friend of a friend so dont know how reliable this is.

I've heard of people targeting bass at the northern end of Dunmoran Strand just up the coast from Aughris but i've never heard of anyone catching any. Then again I don't think i'd tell too many people if I was getting them. Hope to fish Aughris for a few hours over the weekend hopefully some fish about.
