South Shore of Shannon Estuary

Sat May 13, 2006 8:33 pm

People:Me

Duration: Littor strand 11am till 1:30, Limerick Estuary mark 2pm till 4pm

Tide: Low tide after 12pm

Weather: Cloudy warm

Bait: MainlyMackerel but sand eel and squid as well/

Rigs: Pulleys and up and overs

Results: 3 thornies to 4lbs.

Report: No bites from littor but hooked a shrimp, a spider crab and scured a tiny fish on grip lead spike. Moved to my favoured Limerick mark to save a blank and fished with one rod. Had bite on first cast but lost to snag, had 5 bites on consecutive casts resulting three thornies and struck early on two of casts to prevent gut hooking but lost the fish. As water was silted I fished close in and all fish were within 50 yards of shore. Was late in the tide for this mark so would of got more if I'd been earlier. Went quiet when the tide ran which is usual here so went home.

nice one 8)
what distance would you normally be casting in the limerick mark to be getting the ray, say if the water was clear?

Hi Gearoid,

My casting is still very hit and miss. A 70 to 80 yard cast is usually best here. If there are no fish try and cast longer or shorter. I've often found at night a birds nest resulting in a 30 yard cast can often produce the only ray of the session. Was snaggy here the last day but this changes depending on silt movement.

Unusual species list you have but kilteery can throw up some usual catchs. Last time I fished there I caught a the largest pair of Y-fronts ever seen gave a hell of scrap.
