Mon Apr 24, 2006 10:06 am

People:Myself

Duration:2.5 hours

Tide:last 2 hrs of flood

Weather:glorious sunshine, no breeze

Bait:fresh lug, white rag, maddies and peeler

Rigs:up and over clipped down with lots of bling, and 3 hook flappers

Results:1 miserable ballan wrasse (summer is close)

Report:
Fished from 7 - 9pm on the North Beach last night. Was trying for some red spots but unfortunately failed. Only had 1 ballan on lug tipped with maddies on an up and over adorned with beads. Met a lad on the beach who was fishing with his family all day, he had caught a plaice earlier, also reading what Bovenip had on the Souuth Beach perhaps I was in the wrong spot.

Just as a side note, i wanted to get some squid yesterday to tip off my worm baits, I tried Celtic baits, fair enough they were probably out digging at low tide, drove over to henry's - was closed, out to Baumanns in Stillorgan and that was closed, I remember a similar situation on a Sunday last year, very bad job.

Also about 8:30 last night an enumerator for the census approached me and asked me if I was staying overnight on the beach, if so I would have to be counted in the census! I told her not unless I started getting a few bites, she didn't see the funny side, oul hag!

I'm all for government 'officials' visiting our beaches at all hours. Pity it wasn't a fishery protection officer of some sort.

The census is really important  . After the last one, the guys in government knew exactly (or at least they claimed they'd know) how many hospital beds, school places, how much public transport capacity, infrastructure etc we would need in the coming years and then made damned sure we didn't get it. About all the last one proved conclusively was that 99% of the population hated statistics and that we have a whole government (that's 100%) who apparently can't do basic arithmetic.

Have another look at your census form, before you send it off to be machine read and recycled - at your expense, by the way. If you are reading this, you're probably an angler. You may also play football, swim or participate in some other leisure activities. Did you see any question in there about lifestyle? No. Nearest thing was a question on whether you had recently done any voluntary work for a sporting organisation. A fat lot of use this census will be. I quote as my precedent for that remark the outcomes from the previous census.

A relevant question, for the next census form, might be 'do you think the government is doing a good job'? Bet I know what almost 100% of the forms would say....
