That's a serious session. 8) If you're buying bait, it's got to cost you a bomb...still, worth it for a fish a chuck.

Wouldn't surprise me if they were giltheads again, Phil. That (contoversial) pic he had in his gallery a while back, if nothing else, showed beyond a doubt what appeared to me to be at least two and possibly three different year-classes which sort of indicates that there must be a viable and healthy breeding population down there.

Question now is, how widespread are they? We don't seem to have them in Donegal, as far as I know. In fact the only bream species I've heard of off Donegal as black bream out of Culdaff, unless anyone knows different???

there was a bream of some description caught at carnlough beach a couple of christmas ago, i seen the photo on the guys phone it was about the size of his hand but the photo wasnt great quality so i couldnt figure what species it was. there were also reports of bream being washed up on the beaches on the north coast at a stage last year. with global warming and all the rest they might make it our length before too long sandman!! :wink: :P

A lot of migratory fish get caught up in pockets of warmer water which break off from the main flow and cool, whereupon the fish die - they can't hack that drop of a few degrees. I'd say that's what happened with the bream last year. That's why Cortaz's pic was interesting - it showed what looked like being representative of a resident, breeding population, rather than a few stragglers who's days were numbered.

The trick this year might be to keep an eye on the met buoys to see when the water temp peaks and have a go then. I'm all for global warming if it'll put a few new species within the home range - or up the numbers of bass and trigger to levels where targetting them is more hit and less miss. Some people say it'll be the end of the cod, but since when were there any left to catch up this way?

there are lots of bream if u can avoid the bass
cast out to max. slowly retreve line deadly every single time bass
could catch 50 tomorrow not a ghillie/angler in the country could say the same

Well done Art. Do you normally start to get them in big numbers this early in the year. I know myself and a few of the other lads are pi$$ed off about the very cold weather we have been having. It seems to have put a lot of the fishing off. Seems everyone is waiting for it to heat up a bit.

first bream ever in april the bass are there from march on to oct.
the weather has got warmer last few days 12
/14 degrees.
the east wind had been keepin things quite.
changed to the s.w. tuesday
am going out at 3 today think i will catch about 50lol
its heavy and overcast here fresh s/w.
got to go dig some lugs will post report later.
