Antrim beach

well its been a while snice I have managed to get out fishing so a plan was hatched to met up with my mate Louis and fish a Co Antrim beach. The plan was to fish low to high water in the hope of some fish mainly the elusive cod, so I packed the car and headed off early to be there before low water at 1.34pm. I arrived around one and saw Louis had set up and was fishing already, so I quickly got suited and booted set up the rods with my new fathoms and walked down the lane and went to the left of Louis. I set up base camp in front of the GAA goal post (big clue) and soon had baits in the water. The day was mild with a nip in the air and the hopes where high as I watched the rod tips, which remained motionless for a long while as even the crabs weren't biting. Even though the baits came back in in perfect condition I still went through the routine of fresh baits, a full squid stuffed with black lug on a 3/0 pennel and a selection of other baits on a 1/0 loop rig. I had a wide selection of baits to choose from as I had mackerel, sandeel, squid, cockles, razor and black lug. I casted to distance and in close but nothing happened until the sun went down, as it dipped over the horizon I got a tap on the big bait and as I watched it went over and sprung back giving a slack line. I stuck and soon felt a bit of weight, the fish gave a good account of itself but was soon beaten and a fine coalie of 42cm was on the beach. Blank beaten and one new reel christened, once the fish was released a new bait was launched skyward and the rod tips sat motionless again. While the big bait soaked I cycled through different combinations of bait on the 2 hook loop rig, casting to all distances an finally once darkness had truly set in I managed a doggie, it took a single black lug tipped with squid no other bait was looked at. My mate Louis was doing the same as me, one big bait and small baits on the other rod, he managed to catch two doggies both on black lug and squid. We fished on until high water at 7.45pm and as the baits where being untouched we decided to pack up around 8pm. The trip home was a bit hairy as some of the roads I had to take where frosty so it was slow and steady until I got on the main roads, all in all a great days fishing, used new reels and christened both of them and had a laugh with a mate, a good way to start the 2023 fishing season off, roll on the next time.

Very good MC
Am guessing that that was Cdun
It's a tough beach at the best of times (the cod it is famous for are long gone) but it does throw up a very occasional decent fish
Sounded nice to be out all the same. Fair play 8)

Good man MC, well stuck out! Blank beaten and home safe and sound, not a bad first session of 2023 by any means!
