North Antrim Coast - Slow Going

Wed Dec 29, 2021 3:24 pm

Haven't done a report in nearly a year..
Went to a very accessible and comfortable mark on the north coast yesterday, a lovely big flat rock that could comfortably accommodate 4-5 tripods, fishing into 2-5 metres of water with clean ground
This mark has been known to produce the odd nice plaice and cod in its time but yesterday it was deadly slow
3 of us fished 2 or 3 rods each and only one small flounder was caught over 4 hours
It was a really nice settled day with great views of Sheep Island and Rathlin beyond. It was nice to get out, meet-up with the other lads and enjoy the fresh air regardless. Hopefully any next trip will be a lot more productive

New Year's resolution coming up?

That was a poor return for a lot of rod/man hours, was it a case of "The easier the mark, the harder the fishing"? Interesting markings on that crab, never seen that before (except where somebody left a lit cigarette on a table!).

Yip, a pretty woeful return JW. It would have been too much an ask to get a bumper haul on such a comfortable mark, lol
Pretty sure that that is a swimming crab of some sort, either a vernal crab or a flying crab. And pretty sure that the mark down the back isn't descriptive of either species, just a big birth mark

This settled weather has made the fishing crap everywhere - galway bay barren on two marks on the 28th
hearing the west clare marks on the shannon are dead quiet also
its too warm at the moment - the fish arent used to it!

It's ridiculously mild at the minute, weather would not be out of place in late March or April.

There is no doubt in my mind that the winters are way milder. This winter and last winter we have had very little cold weather. This winter so far in Cork we have had just one frosty morning by my reckoning. In the UK they had the warmest NYE on record it hit 15 Deg there
