Bundoran 29.08.2020

Mon Aug 31, 2020 9:31 pm

When: 29/08/2020
Where: Bundoran. Portbeg and Bundoran Beach
Duration: 09:00-11:30
Equipment: 4.2m rod using mackerel strips on single 2/0 hook flapper. 3m rod with float using mackerel strips on 2/0 hook.
Conditions: Brutal northerly wind.
Result: Blank.
Started at rocks behind Portbeg after a tip from Land & Sea Tackle shop. (Great for wrasse using unweighted limpets on a hook at low tide)
But the northerly wind made unweighted casting impossible. Heavy weed ruled out anything else.
So packed up and went elsewhere. North side of Bundoran beach seemed the only mark nearby that could offer shelter from the wind, with a big rocky hill outcrop at my back.
But the wind still found me. Forecast was for 20km winds, but it was a lot stronger for me.
Set up the 2 rods with the tide passing it's lowest point. Got no action beyond a few curious birds eying up my mackerel.
Lost the flapper rig. The sand tapers out and turns to rock and weed.
Called it a day at that.

Hard luck on the blank man, that profile pic is hilarious though

Thanks
I've had a few blanks as I've only taken the hobby up this year after about 20 years break, still figuring some things out.
In this case I should've called it off when I saw the weather for myself. Ah well

Jonney if you're in that area you should try Rossnowlagh beach in the evening into dark. We have had 3 comps there in the last month and fished very well. Average around 200 fish per comp for 15 or 16 anglers.

I was hoping to get up there on the day after this blank as the weather was much better.
But the War Office informed me that this would not be a wise move.

Tough luck, you couldn't have "picked" a worse wind for Portbeg!

Does anybody have any recommendations for Bundoran/Rossnowlagh as to the best bait setup/tides etc for them to be fished?
Hoping to hit up one of them over the weekend when the weather is decent. Thanks in advance.

You will get almost anything on mackerel, lug is good too. As for rigs 2 up 1 down with size 4 hooks. I prefer a dropping tide but that will mean a night session this weekend. If the weather is decent the beach will be jammed during the day anyway. If fishing rossnowlagh directly below the hotel or tight to the cliff on the left are the best spots. A warning, do not park on the beach this weekend, high tides catch a lot of drivers out.

Thanks a million for the info. Hopefully I’ll get the chance to put it to use
