Ballyquin 23/8/20

Postby robbiekennedy » Mon Aug 24, 2020 2:14 pm

Went to ballyquin , high tide was 21.45 had about 40 worms , started at 7.30 - 10.30 , nice little session had 9 fish in total , nothing very big , 3 bass around the 2 pounds mark , 2 dogs , 2 flounder , a coalie and a nice surprise codling around the 2 and a half , plenty bites and completely weed free which was a surprise as a lot of beaches around here have feet of the stuff , I haven’t fished there in a spell as it has been very poor , hopefully it wasn’t a one off and a sign of things to come

Nice going
Fished clonea strand a few times maybe 10 years ago and caught a few bass on it. Never ventured past ring though. Sounds like species are more varied where you were

Yes, mostly summer is bass flounders and dogs , from now on you can add cod coalie and whiting to that , I’m hearing few giltheads being picked up around too at the moment, never had one but have had a bream like fish there before, pinky kind of colour , lovely fish

Possibly , same shape as black bream but pinky red colour and reasonable set of teeth , only ever got them 1 pound or there abouts , think I see a fella on you tube in southern england getting them too and called at a couches bream or something like that , could be wrong on that though

Very possibly a couch's bream you caught in the past
There have been a few caught in the Shannon estuary recently apparently and they seem a somewhat more regular catch off the south of England and the Channel Isles in recent years. That's the first I've heard of from Ireland
