Mayo Beach and rocks December

Sun Dec 03, 2017 12:27 am

Headed off this morning dug some lug and collected a few crabs along with frozen mack I headed for the beach. Was fishing the incoming tide and chose my spot. One rod with just a 1 clip down full of lug and a scratching rig with lug and mackerel. Started slow and the tide was rising fast then a light switch turned on. Had a knock and a heavy weight on the scratching rig. A treble turbot 19,21,27cm great start. This followed by another single of 21 and then a more noticible bounce. Out popped a double turbot 26cm and my best this year of 31cm delighted to say the least. Last cast, the line went slack but I was pleased to have a double of a flounder 36cm and a turbo 27cm.nothing caught on the clip down rig at all.
Headed to a rock mark for the last two hours of light. First drop of a hardback crab had a pollack 47cm. This followed by a Ballen wrasse at 36cm and then had a smaller pollack of 39cm. Started spinning mackerel strips and hit a shoal of coalies great fun on light gear, had 12 roughly, all fell between 32cm and 40cm. Then the one that got away. Hit a pollack at my toes and he shot of like a rocket. A new 3/0 hook. Snapped. Couldn't belive it always the one that gets away. Great days fishing for December and smiling the whole way home as a dirty mist moved in.

That's a great session for any time of the year Joe, and to quote a recent post," great to see the wrasse still about!"

nice port Joe
Love the old turbos, shame we don't find them a bit bigger
I was thinking the same thing JW, nice to see them still around, might be tempted to try to head out myself this weekend if the weather is not too evil...
