Up visiting family in Donegal for the weekend and decided to organise a session with my wife's sisters boyfriend (Dara). Paddy (johnwest) on the forum here gave me a couple of pointers on some spots and the evening before me and Dara went for a recce of one of the likely spots. Drove way out to a beautiful remote spot, halfway to America, walked down to the mark to find someone there already! None other than forum legend johnwest himself, who on cue was pulling in a nice dab.
We had a nice chat for about ten minutes and then Dara and I had to go back as our better halves were in the car. I could have stayed all day talking fishing.
So we came back today with better halves in tow. We started out bottom fishing out on the sand with zero success. I then set up the spinning rod for Dara and lashed on a frozen sandeel and a running weight on the line. Two minutes later and there was a roar- Dara had his first ever shore fish on. A few scares on the way in, and we landed the fish
At this point I abandoned the bait fishing and set up a rod to spin with a Savage gear sandeel. Few casts and I had a good solid pull. The fish really dogged it out but I managed to bully it in- my own best ever shore pollock, a good fish of about 4lb (I had only ever caught 1-2 lb fish from the shore to date)
As I was unhooking this fish Dara brought in another, the smallest of the three.
That was it for the day, we missed a couple more fish before we finished up.
The fish were kept for our hungry relatives- we are doing pollock goujons for our Easter Sunday family dinner.
Just can't get enough of Donegal, incredible part of the world. Many thanks to Paddy for helping out, a real gent
