Mon May 02, 2016 5:12 pm

Who: Mise
Where: Passage Strand
Duration: 5 hrs approx
Tide: HW @ approx. 2PM
Weather: Windy, raining, clouds then sun
Traces: Pulley pennel, various flappers
Bait: Manky macky, squid, ragworm
Results: A tiny flounder and a tiny plaice

Report: To kick off May after a nice holiday away I headed down to Passage East to wet a line. It was sunny as I waited for the ferry but once I arrived at Passage it was blowing a hooly and raining.
After a few casts up near the pier side of the strand I went around the corner to the shallower waters. A man and his son were fishing and saw me struggling to catch anything with manky mack so they gave me a wrap of ragworm. After the thanks I baited them up and within 5 minutes I had a tiny flounder that had foul-hooked itself on the pulley pennel while nibbling the ragworm's tail. He was put back and things went quiet as the clouds moved on. As the sun came out I reeled in my 2nd rod to land a tiny plaice, and my first! It's a plaice, isn't it? Bumpy head, smooth lateral line and orange spots?

Flounder, plaice, dab whatever it was I was happy to beat the blank with 2 fish which were both returned. Not a fish was landed after that so at around 4:30 I packed up and headed home.
EDIT: I talked to my cousin recently and he said he's caught plaice albeit small from this mark.

Looks like a flounder. the 3 flat fish, flounder plaice and dab can all have orange spots at times.

this might help to ID them

The Dab: if you rub from the tail to the head it has rough skin. The lateral line curves sharply over the pectoral fin.

The Plaice: has bony lumps on it's head

The flounder: has a rough area on the lateral line before the head
