Surprise at Duncannon Pier 25-3-16

Fri Mar 25, 2016 10:27 pm

Who: Me and brother
Where: Railings along Duncannon Pier
Tide: HW @ 6:44PM
Duration: 2.5 hrs
Weather: Cloudy with strong wind
Tackle: 1 & 2 hook flappers, and a 2/0 hook tied to main line (caught most fish, no leads)
Bait: Frozen Lug
Results: 1 rockling, 1 whiting, 3 coley and a plump 29cm dab

My little brother has caught the fishing bug so we popped down to Duncannon for a few hours. I have an 8ft rod for him but he prefers to use a €1.99 1.25m rod he got from Mr Price along with a €5.99 reel. I thought he was crazy but I let him off. I threw out my bait as far as I could (not very far) and since he has a weak rod he just tied on a 2/0 hook to his main line; no leads, and popped on a lugworm, no bait elastic
I got a pin whiting after a few minutes and I hear a little yelp of joy behind me.
This little lad with his Mr Price tackle brings in his first fish of the night, a rockling. These are followed by 3 coleys of a smallish sized, keep in mind he was popping his hook over the railing! He was so happy

I got a big whack on my rod and reeled in a plump 29cm dab who put up a great fight. Very happy with my brother, he has beginner's luck

Nice session, was great to get out, very windy :?

Just goes to show- the fish don't mind what rod you're using !

Yeah, what really surprised me was that there was no lead on the line, just a hook. He's dying to go down there again
