Ballycotton hopping with them last evening till about 9pm. Decent sized ones too. Hazardous angling conditions with hooks flying everywhere and the usual waste and greed unfortunately with people taking them away by the bucket.

Hi Lads,

Long time lurker here, but often check out the Shore Reports.

I finally managed to head out for a couple of hours to Howth (Balscadden) yesterday, with the plan of catching a few tasty mackerel for dinner.
It was busy as usual but very few mackerel were being caught.

Is there a specific time or tide which is best for Mackerel?
I've heard different people swear by different times...
E.G It's only worthwhile at low tide, otherwise they can't see the feathers.
E.G Hour coming up to high tide is when they're coming in to feed.

Is there any pattern here or is their appearance more or less random?

On the plus side, I didn't blank and caught I fish I've never seen before.

Would I be right in saying this (attached) is a Garfish?

Cheers,
BlueBeard

BlueBeard - it is a garfish. Never seen one of them caught in howth but nice to see.

In my opinion 3 hours either side of high tide is best for howth. The water is too coloured this weekend. Wait for a few days of south westerly winds and try again when the water is a bit clearer.

i normally go 2 hours before high tide and stay 2 hours after , but if the macks are there you would catch em anytime almost , neverheard the thing about them not seeing the feathers sounds like rubbish
