Re: SHORE MACKEREL REPORTS 2016

Youghal yesterday evening started off at the carpets ,no fish being caught and hauling in weed every cast. Gave it about half an hour before we went for a move. Was passing by the little mooring basin at Harvey's Apartments and saw a lot of activity on the surface. Looked in and there were loads and loads of mackerel chasing and devouring tiny silver fry in only a couple of feet of water- they were making a serious commotion- I thought it was going to be time to bag up.

Dropped in the feathers (very small silver ones) and herself was jigging a small silver metal but the macks were completely fixated on gorging themselves on the fry - they just had no interest. The speed at which they move when hunting is quite a sight. After a while they had either eaten all the fry or gotten full and the shoals were just cruising around. At this stage we were able to tempt the very odd fish on the feathers and metal but not many- we got half a dozen in about 40 minutes. The basin was full of people at this stage but no one was getting many.

When I gutted them at home, I could see where the phrase "full to the gills" comes from. The fishes stomachs and throats were full up with fry right up to the mouth. It's no wonder they had no interest in the artificals- its actually a miracle they could swim at all they were so full.
