We decided to head to Cork for a visit, small fishing competition and catch the Super bowl. Up early Saturday morning, we decided to get a bit of extra bait as we only had a few razor and frozen black lug. Got to the shore after 9 am and began digging, after 25 minutes we had some small white rag and few lug worm, enough for a few baits. Happy with that we got to our mark a short time later. On the beach, there was a nice swell rolling in and no weed. Setting up the gear, I decided to check my leader as I hadn't been out for a while, one strong pull and it snapped! I took a few metres off the mainline and began tying a new leader. In the meantime the lads had baited up and their lines were ready for the water. I arrived over to get some bait from the lads, Eoin used razor, Will used razor and fresh worms, so I decided to go for razor and black lug. Picking up the packet of black lug (clear plastic packaging), I commented "this looks like frozen puff pastry", the lads laughed at my comment a bit confused....I opened the pack and sure enough it was puff pastry!!!
Some fluent French followed by a lot of laughter!! Hilarious
Anyway on with competition and with less bait than expected, we were looking for species and the biggest fish! Our first cast was in the water by the turn of low tide, around 10 am. It was difficult to get distance with the cast because of the wind, but it didn't matter, the swell and the tide was pushing in nicely. Lines in the water, we got hit by a heavy shower, no bother as we were still laughing about our new found puff pastry! After a good 20-25 minute soak, as Will was reeling in, Eoin noticed one strong bang from his rod, lifted into it and made his way to the shore reeling in. I was a bit up the beach unaware until I heard Will shout.... FISH! As I ran over I could see Eoin fighting a fish in the surf. A bar of Silver came in on the rolling wave. Sweet! Eoins first bass and healthy one at that, of around 5/6 lbs! A few quick photos and the fish was released back into the surf!
Within minutes we were baited and lines soaking in the hope of another fish. However, It wasn't to be, we fished on for a few more hours without a touch and called it a day! February fishing is a tough endeavour and we had picked a tough day to fish but we were pleasantly surprised with the result. That one fish made the day and Eoin won this years SuperfishBowl!
