Tide: low water was at 1400

Wind: Breezy south westerly

Weather beautiful and sunny

Bait - frozen Black lug, frozen squid

Results -A humble dogfish and lost a probable ray

So Saturday was a strange day. My charter trip was cancelled the evening before due to high winds, so decided to go lure fishing in what I thought would be a sheltered spot in the harbour.

No good, wind was dead against tide water was like a sea weed soup. After a bit of a hike back to my car all I wanted was some pleasurable fishing.

I then remembered the last of the winters bait was still in the freezer and needed to be used or thrown out. waste not want not I packed the bait gear and headed down to Ballycotton.

Weather was lovely by this stage.Set up with the normal two hook flapper with size 1 hooks baited with black lug in the hope of a flattie on the lighter rod.

The heavy rod I set up with a 4/0 pully rig baited with the squid hoping I might pick up a ray.

Quiet enough, was just pulling in the bug rod to re bait and it felt heavy coming in,but no movement so I just assumed a had cought a nice large weedfish. Turned out to be a dogfish and the blank saved. I did not even see the bite, probably because my large rod has the sensitivity of a crowbar it's brutal!

When pulling in this rod twenty minutes later, again I felt a weight and was certain I had another dogfish. However I then felt a decent pull back so I guessed it might be a ray. Sure enough I saw a light brown kite coming in behind my lead. Then to my dismay the weight came off the line and saw the kite turn around and head away.

At that stage the bait was used up and it was time for home. Few fellas feathering for mackerel, not one fish caught among them
