Night at the dogs

Well I managed to get out fishing again, spent some time at a swilly mark looking for Rays. Well had a bait in the water just. Before 11pm and before I had the other rod set up the bait was attacked, missed it, got two baits chucked out and I didn't wait too long before a doggie was on. Using only frozen mackerel and sandeel I was kept busy for a few hours before it went quiet, after 13 dogs I was enjoying the break. Once the crabs had their fill I got a gentle tap, followed by a gentle pull down before the tip rattled, lifted into something heavier, not much of a fight a few dives before a big dog showed its head, a nice Huss, close to 5lbs and very angry at being hooked.

Things retuned to being quiet with the crabs feeding again and another doggie. At 3am I baited up with a mackerel/sandeel combo and chucked them out. With the rod tips staying motionless for 20minutes and getting eaten by midgets I started to pack up, Sod's law once I put stuff away a rod tip goes with a typical doggie bite, which I missed but left the bait out, maybe the crabs would clean my hooks. No sooner than I put that rod down the other one rattled very violently another nice doggie hooked, there must have been a pack of wee dogs as the other rod rattled so I had both rods with fish on. After a bit of quick retrieving and unhooking I managed to land both. So with dawn breaking at 4am and no bait left I. Finished the night with 16 dogfish and one Huss, my best Huss to date but the target species never showed so will have to nice to the wife to try and get another wee Ray hunt soon.

It surprises me how easily doggies can damage a 30lb snood had to replace a few durning that wee session. I know some anglers hate the humble lsd but when nothing else is playing ball they can keep you busy.

Always good to get out and even if the target species didn't show you had the consolation of your best huss to date, I haven't caught one of those in years. Like you say, doggies can provide a bit of sport when nothing else comes out to play. As Brendan Behan wrote, "when all fruit fails, be glad for haws".

Hope it's a sign that there may bigger Huss in this bay, may actually start targeting them with a big squid/mackerel bait
