I was chomping at the bit to get out fishing after a few busy weeks workwise and homewise so when Neil suggested we try Arklow I was only too happy to try bag my first Smoothound of the year from this beach. There was a regatta on in the bay but I had no problem parking and better still the van was in view all evening from where we were fishing. I got there about 5-30pm and the tide was still dropping with low water at around 8pm. Neil was set up and was bringing in a small Dab when I arrived.

We both had some rag and lug for dinkyfishing in close and crab for the smoothies at distance. I had a succession of small dabs in close and Neil put the pressure on me by catching a small smoothie early on

We were both pulling in doggies on the crab at distance and we feared it was to be a dogfest but as per usual Mr Brown didn't let me down. I noticed him going quiet for a while and he took a stroll down to his left and I knew it was time to get the camera out for his close up with Mr Smooth

I lashed out another crab in an attempt to cash in on the action but it just resulted in another doggie

They were even coming in by the double on the flappers in close but eventually I landed my first smoothound of 2015,,,,along with 2 dogs,,,,3 fish on a 2 hook flapper

Neil was having better luck,,,though he would say it was skill

,,,and he went down the beach for another half decent sized smoothie

We met another angler,Liam, who I knew from Dublin Angling, and he kindly gave us a pile of bait as he was leaving. Thanks Liam and that bait got me out again the next day

No big smoothies on this occasion for me but I did get some pups to start the ball rolling so it wasnt three bad

Mr Brown , not content with outfishing me on the smoothound front, had to go that extra mile and 10 minutes after saying there was a chance of a Ray off this beach, goes and nabs a Thornback Ray

Plenty of fish as usual in Arklow,,,don't think we had a blank cast all night and a memorable night for Mr Brown

The only downside to his evening is that he has been left with a permanent grin on his face
