Brandon, Kerry 14th to 17th - Bass and Trout

Thu May 21, 2015 11:56 am

Quick report as im in work and up to my nuts in it. Fished Kerry last Thur for Bass and Fri, Sat and Sun morn for trout. Plan was to target pollock but marks were blown out of it. Thur night up til 12 we fished a mark that has let us down once in 20 years. Bass were there as we expected but my mate Stephen got all four. I didnt get a single tap. On inspection of our what looked like identical traces, he had 2 luminous beads. Could that really have made the difference..? He landed 4 and lost 2 on the way in and I barely had a tap. Casting same distance into same area. It was a very dark night with almost new moon. I would have never thought these beads will be the difference, still not sure. Might have been one of those nights.
Anyway, very hard to walk away at 12pm when the tide had 3 hours to go and it was really warming up.

Rest of the weekend was on the trout and we had some good sport. I had several trout and Steve not a tap. I would have swapped my trout for bass any day but always my preference to take a fish on a lure over bait. Lost a very good trout at the mouth of the estuary fishing into a lovely surf. Classic trout fight. Savage take and felt a good 3 pound or more.

Always a pleasure to fish Brandon in Kerry, stunning place, the locals are friends at this stage. Weather was cold and the strong Westerly winds ruined our pollock marks but that's how it goes.

Really curious on anyone's take about the luminous beads..? Surely scent alone would be enough to take some fish.

Some beauties there Eoghan. Fair play to you and Steve.

Can I ask what lure you had on for the Trout? Hoping to head down that way myself in a few weeks.

Niceone at least you had a few fish in the end. Could be the beads but could also be the bass moving up the beach and hitting the first bait which happened to be your mates.
Seen it happen a lot and that's why an end peg in a comp is a nice bonus.

Good to hear flounder, I really think it did that night. There were plenty of bass about. Usually on this mark we draw, as in I would have expected to also catch 4 or similar. When its not firing one of us might get one and the others blank. Looking back at past sessions it has been 7 each, 5 each, 7-6, 4-3 and so on. It has never been so one sided. The closest was one night I had 7 and the other 2 lads had 3 each. Only once in 20 years has nobody caught no bass and that was last year. So with 4 landed and 2 off it really had to be something causing it. Interesting on this night there was lots of bioluminescence in the water.
