Lacken Pier, North Mayo 11.02.2006

Sun Feb 12, 2006 1:25 pm

People: Bruce Vaughan, Mans Geerinck and myself

Duration: 2.5 hours, from 3:30 to 6 pm

Tide: incoming, HW at 5:15 pm

Weather: cold, slight SW breeze, grey

Bait: frozen.... sandeel, squid and mackerel (it had gone an odd golden colour - apparently fish are not keen on tandoori mackerel.

Rigs: three hook flappers, hook sizes around 1s

Results: Saved from a blank by a shorthorn sculpin and a few small polllack nearing darkness right by the pier wall.

Report: We had initially planned to try somewhere new, out near Creavagh Head but the road past Rathlacken quarry leaves you with a very long walk over boggy ground down to the cliffs and the weather and conditions did not suggest this was a good option so we retreated back to Lacken Pier. At least it was out of the SW breeze. Not my favourite spot, in fact I know it is not a good mark. You do get pollack, mackerel, garfish, coalfish and mullet here in summer, on a good day on an inomcing tiode only and preferably into darkness, with the rumour of congers and the odd flatfish. We had lots of small bites throughout the period but did not hook up on anything which suggests lots of small fish around. There is a new sharp and very nasty snag directly out from the pier at around 40-50 metres - a lead lift would be very important...

Still, it beat watching Ireland go 43-3 down before the French stopped playing... ahem! :?

I don't think the French started playing myself and it was a whole lot better than bad old days when Ireland fell apart in the last 20  .....but I will save this for Scrum.com
