Mustered the motivation to get out Sat night despite some reasonably strong wind forecast. Took a look at the usual haunt but it was ludicrously busy - I do wonder at the virtue of posting on here sometimes lol. Spun around to Cushendall and took a look at the (often very exposed) mark. Seemed much less windy than forecast so decided to give it a go.
Running around the marks had taken nearly 30 mins off me so I was eager to get going, especially as it was now within 2 hrs of the HT. No need for the haste it transpired as 1st 2 casts came in stripped of the customary lug offering.
I'd decided to bring a bit of razor along after some recent advice. Now this hasn't been a good bait for me, in fact I've never had a fish on it! Switched over to a 3H rig for this as I wasn't confident fishing it alone. Lug and crab on the other 2.
A big nod, strike and tussle later and a codling of about 1 lb broke the surface. On what bait? You've guessed it, the razor. My happiness was soon diluted when I saw what was on the bottom 2 hooks - double LSD. I'd been doing well to avoid these last few months so I was a bit worried as I know this place can be plagued by them.
Luckily, they turned out to be strays. That was about half an hour before HT. For the next hour, a steady stream of codling followed, 6 I think in total; 2 about half a pound, 2 about 3/4 and 2 about a lb. I only had 2 razor with me as a trial and they were snaffling that as well as the other baits (with the exception of the dire calamari).
Contrary to recent sessions, the cod seemed to die off half an hr into HW so it was a short but productive flurry. Things went quiet for half an hour and then the coalies came on, interspersed with a lone flounder. I wasn't latening my journey home to feed prime bait to coalie so called it a night at 12. Actually ended up being a nice night all in all. Brief strong gusts but much less than forecast. Also uncannily warm for the time of year, I'd definitely overdone it on layers, being on the verge of sweating at times.
A brief but enjoyable night and great to get confidence in a new bait.
