Report:
After a disappointing day on the east coast and with plenty of lug left I decided to give a Donegal Bay beach a go. As I was drawing close to the first choice beach which entails a good 20 min walk, the rain was coming down hard with a fairly strong breeze helping it so I decided to change to a spot closer to the refuge of the car. I had a quick cup of coffee and then set up, thankfully conditions had settled a bit and this beach gave some shelter from the wind which was at my back anyhow. A very gentle surf was coming in so I cast one rod very close in and the other a bit further out. Bites started fairly soon on the far rod, small coalfish. They came in a steady flow chomping their way through lug, mackerel and prawn alike. Eventually the close rod showed a rattle and in came another coalfish but accompanied by a small flounder. The flounder came on the feed and started coming in 2’s and 3’s, they slowed at high tide but resumed into the ebb. No huge fish but the best 2 reached 31cm. An occasional distance cast with a large mackerel bait aimed at dogfish produced only a single scrawny whiting so both rods were concentrated in close. This seemed to reduce the numbers of small coalies and give the flounder a chance. The flounder had no great interest in the lug and with supplies of mackerel and prawn exhausted, it was time to pack up. Final tally was 21 flounder, 1 whiting and about 2 dozen coalfish.
